Zagadnienie zarządzania wiedzą zyskuje na znaczeniu w obecnych czasach ze względu na zainteresowanie budowaniem zasobów wiedzy jako wyraźnej przewagi konkurencyjnej przedsiębiorstwa. Wiedza często rozpatrywana jest jako aktywo, którego wycena jest niezwykle trudna. Aktualne standardy rachunkowości nie pozwalają na bezpośrednie rozpoznanie zasobów wiedzy w sprawozdaniu finansowym, przez co wycena rynkowa przedsiębiorstwa oddala się coraz bardziej od wyceny księgowej. Konieczność dostosowania ustawodawstwa do zmieniających się warunków rynkowych oraz gospodarek coraz częściej opartych na wiedzy wymusza wypracowanie rozwiązania, które mogłoby sprawić, aby zasoby wiedzy przedsiębiorstwa stały się identyfikowalne. Ze względu na niepowtarzalny charakter zasobów wiedzy oraz ich specyficzne przeznaczenie właściwa ich klasyfikacja w sprawozdaniu finansowym jest dużym wyzwaniem dla rachunkowości.

The issue of knowledge management is becoming increasingly important these days because of the interest in building knowledge resources as a company's clear competitive advantage. Knowledge is often considered as an asset, whose valuation is extremely difficult. None of the current accounting standards allow direct identification of the knowledge resources in the financial statements, therefore the market valuation of the company is differing more and more from the accounting measurement. The need to adapt legislation to changing market conditions and knowledge-based economies forces to develop solutions that could make the company's knowledge assets identifiable. Due to the unique nature of knowledge and its specific purpose, the appropriate classification in the financial statements is a huge challenge for accounting.
