The article considers issue of the connections between Teodor Parnicki, the Polish author of historical novels, and Russia. His attitude has its origins in biographical experiences. Knowledge of Russian culture is evident especially in the early work of Parnicki, and above all – in literary criticism of the interwar period. Careful reading shows that the sketches and reviews are a conservative critical project, the subject of which is Soviet social and cultural policy and communism in general. This article also complements the current state of research (who did not address this issue), while being a contribution to further research.

W obszernym zbiorze listów Teodora Parnickiego do Teresy i Sławomira Cieślikowskich z lat sześćdziesiątych obserwujemy zawiązującą się stopniowo transkontynentalną przyjaźń intelektualistów. Prozaik, przebywając na meksykańskiej emigracji, pozbawiony był dostępu do czytelników i spragniony kontaktu z nimi, z kolei literaturoznawczyni, związana z Uniwersytetem Łódzkim, pracowała podówczas nad rozprawą doktorską (a finalnie książką) poświęconą pisarstwu Parnickiego. Bardzo uważnym czytelnikiem powieści Parnickiego był także Sławomir Cieślikowski, wybitny orientalista-indolog, i ślady jego lektur również w tym zbiorze odnajdziemy. Jako że wspomniany okres był dla korespondentów czasem bardzo intensywnej pracy, to wymieniane przez nich listy są bardzo treściwe – dotyczą głównie spraw związanych z literaturą oraz historią. Stają się dzięki temu istotnym tekstem źródłowym.

In the broad collection of Teodor Parnicki’s letters to Teresa and Sławomir Cieślikowscy from the 1960s we observe the intellectualists’ gradually forming transcontinental friendship. The prose writer, while staying on emigration in Mexico, was detached from readers but eager to contact them, whereas Teresa Cieślikowska, connected with the University of Łódź, worked at that time on her doctoral dissertation (ultimately a book) on Parnicki’s creativity. Sławomir Cieślikowski, a distinguished Orientalist (Indian scholar), was also a careful reader of Parnicki’s novels, and traces of this reading can also be found in the letters in question. Since the period for the correspondents was a time of intense activity, their letters are pithy: they refer mainly to issues connected to literature and history. Owing to that, they become an important source text.

W recenzji zaprezentowano „Listy do Konstantego Symonolewicza z lat 1928–1949” (2021) i krótko przedstawiono stan badań nad twórczością Teodora Parnickiego oraz wybrane wątki obszernego zbioru, liczącego ponad 160 jednostek. Wątki te dotyczą przede wszystkim biografii pisarza, relacji z jego mentorem i nauczycielem Konstantym Symonolewiczem, a także atmosfery intelektualnej przedwojennego Lwowa oraz polityczności życia literackiego. Autor recenzji podkreśla, jak znakomicie została opracowana korespondencja Parnickiego i Symonolewicza. Tomasz Markiewka w obszernych przypisach cierpliwie tłumaczy zawiłe i szerokie konteksty listów: językowe, literackie, biograficzne, historyczne i kulturowe. Recenzowany tom stanowi bardzo ważne i w zasadzie finalne ogniwo w cyklu nieliterackich publikacji Parnickiego. Jest cennym źródłem wiedzy o pisarzu i wpływie biografii na literaturę (kluczowym dla twórczości autora „Słowa i ciała”), a także o życiu kulturalnym przedwojennego Lwowa.

The review undertakes “Listy do Konstantego Symonolewicza z lat 1928–1949” (“Letters to Konstanty Symonolewicz from the Years 1928–1949”) (2021) and briefly describes the state of research in Teodor Parnicki’s work as well as selected threads of the comprehensive (over 160 items) collection. The threads predominantly refer to the writer’s biography, the relation with mentor and teacher Konstanty Symonolewicz, alongside of the intellectual ambience of prewar Lvov and literary life politicality. The reviewer stresses how brilliantly Parnicki and Symonolewicz’s correspondence was prepared. Tomasz Markiewka in his comprehensive commentaries patiently explicates the complex and wide linguistic, literary, biographical, historical, and cultural contexts. The volume is viewed as a seminal and principally the ultimate item in the non-literary cycle of Parnicki’s publication. It is a valuable source of knowledge on the writer and on the influence of biography on literature (key issue for the author of “Słowo i ciało” <”The Word and the Flesh”>) as well as on the cultural life of prewar Lvov.

In the article, Gorliński-Kucik describes the determinants of science fiction conventions which aim at investigatiing the future of man and civilization. In doing so, the author reflects on movies released in recent years (2013–2019), which, in his opinion, best exemplify the problem in question, i.e. the construal of transhumanism. Analysed films include: Her (2013), Under the Skin (2013), Lucy (2014), Transcendence (2014), Chappie (2015), Arrival (2016), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Ghost in the Shell (2017), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), and Netflix animated anthology Love, Death & Robots (2019). Gorliński-Kucik concludes that vast majority of interpreted movies addressess the post-human and predicts its appearance in the near future―without, however, fully escaping the eponymoys dichotomy of hope and paranoia.

The author analyses Andrzej Dobrowolski’s exquisite edition of letters of the editor of Kultura Jerzy Giedroyc and Teodor Parnicki written between 1946 and 1968. This volume of their prolific correspondence reveals a lot of previously unknown facts from the biography of the author of Słowo i ciało and the life of immigrants at the time of the Polish People’s Republic, and shows problems Parnicki had publishing his novels in the Instytut Wydawniczy PAX.

L’auteur analyse l’édition des lettres de Jerzy Giedroyc, rédacteur de « Kultura », et de Teodor Parnicki parfaitement élaborée par Andrzej Dobrowolski. Il s’agit des lettres qui ont été écrites dans les années 1946–1968. Ce riche recueil de correspondances apporte beaucoup d’informations qui n’étaient pas connues auparavant et qui concernent la biographie de l’auteur de Słowo i ciało, l’émigration à l’époque de la République populaire de Pologne, ainsi que les problèmes de Parnicki liés à la publication de ses romans chez Instytut Wydawniczy PAX.
