Niniejszy artykuł traktuje o sposobach porozumiewania się podczas zagranicznych podróży bez znajomości języka kraju docelowego. Podjęte badanie ma charakter diachroniczny i obejmuje różne rodzaje opracowań, począwszy od najdawniejszych wydanych drukiem (rozmówki językowe) po współczesne w formie narzędzi opartych na technologii cyfrowej (przenośne translatory mowy), służących do komunikowania się w typowych sytuacjach życia codziennego. Ze względu na obszerny materiał badawczy główna uwaga zostanie skupiona na oszacowaniu wartości użytkowej tego typu pomocy, w tym w szczególności na sposobach komunikacji, jakie one umożliwiają. Omawiane zagadnienie zostanie zilustrowane na przykładzie pary językowej polsko-niemieckiej, dla której nieprzerwanie od ponad 500 lat powstają coraz bardziej przyjazne użytkownikom narzędzia wspierające komunikację interlingwalną.

This paper deals with ways of communicating when travelling abroad without knowing the language of the destination country. The research is diachronic in nature and covers different types of studies, ranging from the earliest printed publications (phrasebooks) to the contemporary ones in the form of digital technology-based tools (portable speech translators), used for communicating in typical everyday situations. Due to the extensive research material, the main focus will be on assessing the use value of such aids, including in particular the modes of communication they enable. The discussed issue will be illustrated using the example of a Polish-German language pair, for which increasingly user-friendly tools supporting interlingual communication have been developed continuously for more than 500 years.

The article aims to present selected areas of comparative analysis of Polish and German. Due to the large volume of research carried out in the field, the article focuses on those aspects which are the most closely connected with bilingual pedagogical lexicography. To complement the above, the author presents techniques used in Polish-German and German-Polish learner dictionaries and indicates their relation to the comparative analysis results.

The article deals with commonly used (in typical communicative situations) conventionalized linguistic forms containing in their lexical structure elements, referring to widely understood Christian traditions. The research material includes conversational formulas in Polish extracted from the Polish-German phrasebooks. The study has a diachronic character. On the basis of the analyses carried out, it is possible to trace changes in the area of language use in the abovementioned scope, which have taken place from the 16th century to the present day.
