According to the reviewer, Jaroslav Med’s Literární život ve stínu Mnichova (1938–1939) (Literary life in the shadow of the Munich Agreement, 1938–39) presents a panorama of the period through the lens of literary life, while focusing chiefly on landmarks such as the Spanish Civil War. The work is a well-composed whole in which the emphasis on important figures is counterbalanced by an accent on the key ideas and trends of the times. The Czech topic is interpreted against an international background, and literature is considered in the context of the arts and sciences, society, and theology. In his work, the reviewer believes, Med does not cater to any ideology or preconceived thesis, but is a perceptive interpreter of a complicated period.

Between 2007 and 2013 the author carried out extensive statistical surveys of reading in the Czech Republic, the results of which were published successively in 2008, 2011 and 2014. At the same time, between 2009 and 2015 he collected 138 life stories of readers from across the country, representative of the various generations as well as social and professional groups. This material has made it possible to distinguish and describe four generations of readers: 15–24, 25–44, 45–64 and over 65, and to point to key phenomena concerning Czech readers — specific works and authors as well as attitudes to reading in general. The concept of life stories, a unique variety of biographies, on the one hand is based on a chronological interview script, the objective of which is to reconstruct the development of specific readers, and on the other it provides for a degree of freedom and spontaneity of expression, which also reveal an emotional attitude to reading. Another important feature is a strong historical and social context of reading across society. Sources produced as a result significantly complement typical memoirs and letters, which feature reading-related themes, as well as statistical surveys.

The text deals with Czech culture and readership, and is primarily concerned with its present condition. The topic is discussed in three perspectives – from the point of view of reading and readership, public libraries and from the point of view of the book market in the historical context since the end of the eighteenth century to the present. Czech reading culture is in a relatively stable state (of “stabilized instability”), although recently there has been a decrease in the number of visitors to public libraries. The Czech publishing market is concentrated in Prague, albeit in all segments it functions smoothly. The number of those who have read at least one book in the last year (statistical readers) is quite high at 78% (according to a survey from 2018).
