The paper analyses the agri-food trade specialization pattern in Slovakia prior to and after its accession to the European Union in the period 2000 - 2005. The most competitive Slovak agri-food commodities in trade with the examined trade groupings were consumer-oriented products. Degree of agri-food trade specialization dropped over the period for all most important markets. At the same time, Slovakia did not maintain positions of the most competitive commodities; however, it improved positions of a number of previously uncompetitive ones. After 2004, the dynamics of previously rigid trade specialization with the EU-15 and the New Member States of the 2004 EU enlargement accelerated. This is likely to lead to convergence of Slovak trade specialization dynamics across trade partners/groupings.

We build a Slovak sectoral dynamic partial equilibrium econometric model based on EU GOLD model. It is used to analyse the development of the Slovak agricultural markets after EU accession. Simulation results for cereals, oilseeds and meats are provided in this article. Two scenarios are analysed: non-accession baseline and accession with adoption of single area payment scheme. EU accession is expected to increase prices of most products, the biggest increase of prices will occur in animal sector. Because of the higher prices consumption will go down. Decrease of the consumption will be mitigated by income growth. Production will not increase substantially due to decoupling of the direct payments. Trade balance for majority of the products will improve.

We analyse Slovak imports and exports of selected agro-food commodities between 1996 and 2005. The analysis includes the EU-15, selected new member states and candidate countries (Romania, Bulgaria), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), USA and the rest of world (ROW). We show that the dynamic panel data models are appropriate tools for modelling of the agricultural trade flows. We find positive effects of the accession to the EU on Slovak agro-food export flows to the EU-15 and the other regions, while the Slovak agro-food imports show lower growth dynamic. Thus, the agricultural and food processing sectors in Slovakia have benefited from the gradual liberalization of the agro-food trade after the EU enlargement.
