The article analyses the linguistic signs of expressiveness present in the prayers attached to the prose paraphrase of Mikołaj Rej’s David’s Psalter, in particular the evaluative (modality) and intensifying exponents. Rej’s prayers are characterized by a lot of emotionalisms which make them a tool of the emotional expression. The writer uses many expressional synonyms accumulated as two or three evaluative expressions and many epithets which perform the hyperbolic function and intensify the referent feature of the noun. Metaphors and rhetorical questions also serve the function of intensification. The expressiveness is also emphasizes by the use of the elements characteristic of the spoken language: the lexicon of the vernacular speech, a wide variety of phatic signals and demonstrative pronouns. The application of these linguistic phenomena makes Rej’s prayers, despite the structural limitations, assume the character of private confessions full of authentic affection and admiration of God – the addressee.

The article deals with evaluative vocabulary in the religious language in 16th century. The analysis focuses on the evaluative lexicon used by Rej to form an image of an evil man in "David’s Psalter". The paraphrase used by Rej is rich with varied evaluative expressions in respect of the evil man, mainly adjectival elements. It is clearly visible when compared to earlier medieval translations based on the verbal method of translating which follow the Latin linguistic model which is not diverse. What attracts attention is not only a big number of forms, but also the autonomy of the author’s lexical choices which testifies to the author’s free creation of a stereotypical idea of an evil man, to breaking with the Latin shape of Wulgata and to a search of one’s own way of the art of translation. A tendency to avoid repetitions and to care for the synonymic diversity of the epithets has paved a way in David’s Psalter for rare lexemes unknown to the literary language and for morphological doubles and lexemes formed with the use of rare formants. The material analysed has shown Rej as an artist who creates the text of his translation without any restraints and who applies synonymy as an important tool used to shade the meaning.
