The paper discusses changes in the understanding of literary criticism in the Warsaw press at the turn of 19th century, taking as an example 'Tygodnik Ilustrowany', the most popular cultural periodical of the time. The author focuses on journalistic achievements of Ignacy Matuszewski, whose views played an important role in shaping the agenda of 'Tygodnik Ilustrowany' as well as contemporary concepts in literary criticism. The weekly's evolution is discussed against the background of developments in Warsaw's cultural press of the time.
The article discusses changes in Warsaw's cultural press using the example of the weekly 'Tygodnik Ilustrowany'. In 1905-1906, periodicals were published irregularly and were busy battling with preventive censorship. Journalists, literary critics and men of culture had to face new social problems resulting from the continuous expansion of socialist ideology. Articles by Jankowski, Prus and Reymont provide evidence of the uncertainties experienced by the Kingdom of Poland's cultural elites in the new reality.
