Community is a conceptual category that originated from social sciences. However, from the cognitive and analytical point of view no universal definition of the term is available. Problems arise with respect to the definition framework of the category and ambiguity of theoretical concepts regarding the function and substantial state of community. Ideologically, it is frequently perceived as a desirable state, which makes an axiologically neutral analysis rather difficult. Studies of the National Centre for Culture Poland show that sense of community is one of the reasons why Poles celebrate their Independence Day. The article discusses the idea of community attitudes based on David B. Clark’s analysis and the results of the 2016 and 2017 surveys of Poles’ attitudes to and opinions on this holiday.
