The article deals with t he linguistic and aesthetic principles of characters’ understanding of the Christian values in the texts of Vasyl Stefanyk’s novels. The main constants of language and thinking, which reproduce Pokuttian country folkideas concerning following the Christian ethics and morality, have been described. In the worldview of the peasants, depicted by Vasyl Stefanyk, elements of pagan belief, customarylaw, and mythological perception of the image of the world have been refl ected. The author’s position on the ethical norms of the characters is not refl ected directly, but through the reference to living conditions, their psychological self-consciousness. The texts of Vasyl Stefanyk contain a positive assessment of such features of the peasants as benevolence, truthfulness, fear of sin, faith in God.
