世界中のほぼすべての文化において、手作りであれ市販のものであれ、昼食をとるということは共通している。この点において日本も他国と相違ない。日本人は弁当と呼ばれる昼食をほぼ毎日、学校や職場に持っていく。弁当の歴史はとても長く、およそ８世紀には既に存在し、歴史とともにその形態のみならず盛り付け方や中身も変化してきた。 本論文では、弁当の歴史を記述しながら、昔の弁当の諸相や、弁当の語源と表記に用いられた漢字についても言及する。
