The article examines the relation between Tuwim’s poetry and modern colloquial language. The avant-garde artists for whom in the beginning of the 20th-century art was an elite occupation, treated every-day speech as a mass form of communication. Tuwim’s poetry was frequently criticised for banality. Matywiecki presents the poet as a hero fighting with the demon of commonness. The crucial thesis of the article is that banality which is modified in a creative way says more about the epoch than elitist visions. In his poetry, satire and cabaret work Tuwim transformed triviality into dialog and a common human being into a creative person. Transition of the street talk into original speech is the defence against reducing individual being to cliché which means the fear of 20th-century killing ideologies.

Istnieje wiele definicji Europy Środkowej, trzeba jednak stwierdzić, że żadna z nich nie jest pełna, granice tego regionu określa się jako niejasne, płynne, zmienne; z podobną sytuacją mamy do czynienia w przypadku tutejszej tożsamości. Autorka artykułu stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania: Czy istnieje środkowoeuropejska tożsamość? Czy jest ona czymś w rodzaju ponadnarodowej tożsamości lub autostereotypu? Odpowiedzi szuka w XX-wiecznej literaturze tego regionu, która pozwala jej dojść do wniosku, że tubylec jest opisywany dwojako: 1) jako niepełny, w pewnym sensie ułomny człowiek, który nie potrafi wyjść poza siebie, czyli dokonać czegoś niezwykłego (ten typ ma kilka podtypów); 2) jako intelektualista, który nie poddaje się amerykanizacji i który pielęgnuje tradycyjne europejskie wartości. Autorka próbuje spojrzeć na powyższe typy jako na przykłady tożsamości pogranicza.

There are many definitions of Central Europe, but most of them consider the borders of this region to be unclear, vague and changeable; we also have a similar situation in the case of Central European identity. Author tries to answer the questions: does this identity exist? is it some kind of supranational identity or auto stereotype? She was searching for answer in Central European literature of the twentieth century and she found an inhabitant of this region is usually depicted in two ways: 1. as a defective, incomplete man who cannot transcend himself (this type has some subtypes) 2. as an intellectual, who did not undergo Americanization and who cherishes traditional European values. She also considers this Central European types of character as examples of borderland identity.
