The introduction of the new catechetical ministry has raised many questions in the Church about its identity. In the Church in Poland it has also raised problems of terminology. The article deals with the problem of the theological understanding of the ministry of the catechist in the light of the Apostolic Letter Antiquum Ministerium. The starting point is an analysis of this document. On this basis, the essential elements of the ministry introduced are indicated, which is not limited to the intellectual transmission of the faith, but refers to the totality of Christian life. The ministry of the catechist in relation to the liturgy is also presented. Although the Letter does not specify the specific tasks of the catechist, it provides a key to understanding this ministry. Since it is existential in nature, it should be carried out as the primary form of transmitting the faith in Christian initiation. The second place where it should be carried out is in the permanent catechesis of the parish. A special place for the catechist is the preparation for the sacraments, which should be carried out according to the mystagogical method.

Wprowadzenie nowej posługi katechetycznej przyniosło w Kościele wiele pytań o jej tożsamość. W Kościele w Polsce wiązało się ono także z problemami terminologicznymi. Artykuł podejmuje problem jej teologicznego rozumienia w świetle listu apostolskiego Antiquum ministerium. Punktem wyjścia jest analiza tego dokumentu. Na tej podstawie wskazane zostały istotowe elementy wprowadzonego ministerium, która nie ogranicza się wyłącznie do intelektualnego przekazu wiary, lecz odnosi się do całości życia chrześcijańskiego. Ukazana została także posługa katechety w relacji do liturgii. Mimo że list nie precyzuje szczegółowych zadań katechety, daje klucz do zrozumienia jego tożsamości. Posługa ta, mając charakter egzystencjalny, powinna być realizowana jako podstawowa forma przekazu wiary w inicjacji chrześcijańskiej. Drugim miejscem jej wykonywania powinna być katecheza stała realizowana w warunkach parafialnych. Szczególną przestrzenią dla katechety jest przygotowanie do sakramentów, które powinno być prowadzone metodą mistagogiczną.

This article seeks to draw out the implications of synodality as journeying together in some aspects of the Directory for Catechesis (2020) and of Antiquum Ministerium (2021). These notions of synodality cannot be fished out of these documents in an immediate way. The method which will be adopted is a bibliographical one where several texts will be analysed. The first part will seek to give a working definition of synodality. For a balanced view, this will be supplemented by some difficulties in synodality today. This will be followed by a very brief outline of how catechesis changed as a result of the Second Vatican Council. The Directory for Catechesis and Antiquum Ministerium will then be presented in terms of contents within them which point at or call for synodality. Finally, specific aspects of the contents of these two documents will be studied in view of their practical implications to catechesis in the contemporary secularised world, namely synodality within the structures of the Church entrusted with catechesis; accompaniment; listening and speaking, and discernment.
