Migrations have accompanied humankind for hundreds of years. The journeys made to “pursue bread” as the Polish put it, have been ingrained in historical and social processes taking place on both regional and global scales. Decisions to relocate are frequently underpinned by economic reasons, but political, religious, social or climatic reasons can also be factors. These decisions are taken by adults, but their scope and effects also extend to children. The challenges that these children face come in the form of problems with adaptation, education, and the priority of values, oftentimes - loneliness, a lack of close relations, and a reduced sense of security during their stay in foreign environments. The refugee situation is a specific case and a challenge for children. The aim of this article is to highlight the problem of the integration/assimilation of Ukrainian children in Poland who have arrived here as a result of their parents' informed migration decisions, as well as those who have ended up here as a consequence of the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine since 24th February 2022.

What happens when people of different cultures, values, religion live together? Sociological studies on immigrative phenomenon often swing between immigration and integration policies. These policies actually reveal the difficulty of the host society to institutionalize new models of social differences accompanying multiculturalism. Immigrants who “arrive” continue their life in a place where they do not passively participate in the passing of time, but become actors. Pressed by the hegemonic culture of the host society to adapt, do not cease to practice their religious and origin cultural expressions, often in conditions of urban spatial and social marginalization, they resist assimilation with ethnic persistence strategies. Considering the impact of religion and origin cultural values on expression of differences, it is important to consider their role in the integration process. And, above all-facilitate or hinder integration? These dynamics have been analyzed in a research study on immigrants’ integration process in Palermo. The main results are presented in this paper. In this case study, the research’s data hypothesizes a theoretical model of integration in which immigrants, free to express their religious and cultural differences, tend to reduce their perception of minority

The paper is focused on the basic paradigms of the Jewish history in late imperial Russia. In the form of review article, author analyzes several new books about Jews in the Russian Empire and tries to find, how far the old paradigms are changed and new paradigms are created. Article is divided into two parts. In the first part, author is dealing with the Jewish diaspora paradigm, Jewish community paradigm and ‘shtetl’ paradigm, and the paradigm of crisis and continuity in the Russian-Jewish history. All these paradigms are defined as the split identity paradigm. The second part is concerned with the pogrom paradigm and with the effort of several historians to establish a new war pogrom paradigm.

Equality and freedom are the foundations of liberal democracy and the Western society. However, they can be differently defined, and their definition implicates the different conditions and shaping of both culture and society. The main line of distinction is the orientation of definitions of both equality and freedom: they can be individual-oriented or group-oriented. The philosophical dilemma about what is true freedom and true equality is also a practical problem: which definition should be applied in today’s social politics and how to integrate individuals and groups into a single multicultural postmodern society. I shall demonstrate the main conceptions and potential consequences of their application. Then I shall analyse cultural representations of those conceptions. Such representations not only reflect but also influence popular thinking. Finally, I shall try to draw some conclusions regarding the implementation of different social conceptions.

The article attempts to trace the changes in French anti-Islam rhetoric and to situate it in the broader context of the (post)colonial history of assimilation policies in France. The author sets out from the question of the relation between this violence and the formation of ethno-religious difference. He describes the changes in political and cultural identity within French Muslim communities. Contemporary Islamophobia, which is evident in the media as well as in state policy, is juxtaposed with anti-Semitic discourse, in which the question of assimilation plays an important role. The Islamophobic and anti-Semitic narratives concerning the prospects of assimilation are used to demarcate which ethnic groups may be included in the national community and which are seen as genuinely alien.

Tekst jest próbą prześledzenia zmian we francuskiej retoryce antyislamskiej oraz osadzenia ich w szerszym kontekście (post)kolonialnej historii francuskiej polityki asymilacyjnej. Autor wychodzi od pytania o związek łączący przemoc z formowaniem się kategorii etniczno-religijnej różnicy, by wyjaśnić, w jaki sposób kształtowała się polityczna i kulturowa tożsamość francuskich wspólnot muzułmańskich. Współczesna islamofobia i przemoc skierowana przeciwko Arabom, przejawiające się zarówno w dyskursie medialnym, jak i w polityce państwa, zostają zestawione z dyskursem antysemickim, w którym kwestia asymilacji odgrywa równie ważną rolę. Zdaniem autora islamofobiczne i antysemickie narracje dotyczące zdolności danej grupy do asymilacji służą do kreślenia linii demarkacyjnej pomiędzy tymi grupami etnicznymi, które dają się zaliczyć w poczet narodowej wspólnoty (utożsamianej z francuskim państwem), oraz tymi, które postrzegane są jako z samej swej natury obce.

Recent surges of immigration in Western countries have produced statements about what successful assimilation requires. While it is commonly believed that proper assimilation in the West is rooted in shared democratic values, this article argues that beneath such values lies a Christian image of humanity, which, due to the colonial endeavor, is mostly clearly manifest by the white body. As a result of the link between whiteness, Christianity, and civility that develops within the western colonial context and persists into early twentieth-century U.S. immigration, one’s spiritual state as well as one’s fitness for social inclusion are judged along racial lines. By identifying this relationship, the present essay demonstrates the role that Christianity has played in the relentless, racially rooted visual distinction of those who are judged to fit within civilized society and those who are seen as a threat to the established social order.

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja autobiograficznej książki rozliczeniowej Emilii Smechowski Wir Strebermigranten w kontekście twórczości tzw. pierwszego i drugiego pokolenia pisarzy i pisarek polskich w Niemczech (urodzonych w latach sześćdziesiątych, którzy przyjechali do Niemiec z własnej woli, i urodzonych w latach osiemdziesiątych, których zabrali ze sobą rodzice). Interpretacji podlega droga rozwoju bohaterki-narratorki prowadząca od długoletniej i wyobcowującej „nadidentyfikacji” z Niemcami i wymuszonej, zakłamanej asymilacji aż po integrację porzuconej polskiej tożsamości. W artykule wskazano także na podobieństwa opowieści Smechowski z książkami Aleksandry Tobor i Artura Soboczynskiego i na zastosowany przez autorkę koncept „zbawienia przez prawdę” oraz elementy narracji terapeutycznej.

The aim of the article is a presentation of an autobiographical account by Emilia Smechowski entitled Wir Strebermigranten in the context of the literary output of ’the first‘ and ’the second’ generation of Polish writers in Germany (born in the sixties, who willingly came to Germany and those born in the eighties who came with their parents). It is an interpretation of the path of development of the heroine-narrator from long-standing and isolating ’over-identification‘ with the Germans, forced and falsified assimilation, towards integration of the abandoned Polish identity. The article also points to similarities between Smechowski's story and Aleksandra Tobor's and Artur Soboczynski's books and refers to the concept of ’salvation by the truth‘ used by the author and also elements of therapeutic narrative.

Ziel des Beitrags ist es, das autobiographische Abrechnungsbuch von Emilia Smechowski Wir Strebermigranten im Kontext des literarischen Schaffens der „ersten“ (der ungefähr in den Sechzigern Geborenen und allein Ausgereisten) und der „zweiten“ (der ungefähr in den Achtzigern Geborenen und von den Eltern „Mitgenommenen“) Migrantengeneration der polnischen Autorinnen und Autoren in Deutschland darzustellen. Analysiert wird der Weg der Protagonistin von einer jahrelangen, entfremdenden Überidentifikation mit Deutschen und einer erzwungenen, verlogenen Assimilation hin zur Integration ihrer alten, polnischen Identität. Es werden Parallelen zu den Werken von Alexandra Tobor und Adam Soboczynski herausgearbeitet und das Hauptkonzept der „Erlösung durch die Wahrheit“ sowie die Anwendung der therapeutischen Narration besprochen.
