Wstęp. W pracy dokonano ilościowej analizy wpływu wskaźnika BMI na stabilność posturalną kobiet w okresie wczesnej starości. Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w grupie 41 kobiet w wieku 60-74 lata. Stabilność posturalną kobiet oceniano za pomocą komputerowej dynamicznej posturografii (CDP). Oceniano użyteczność sygnałów pochodzących z narządów zmysłów biorących udział w kontroli równowagi ciała oraz prawidłowość doboru odpowiedniej strategii motorycznej. Określano wychylenia środka ciężkości ciała w kierunku przednio-tylnym i łączny wynik analizy równowagi ciała. Wyniki. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono ujemną korelację wskaźnika BMI badanych kobiet z wynikami analizy równowagi oraz wynikami analizy strategii motorycznej. Wnioski. U osób z nadwagą stwierdzono gorsze wykorzystanie informacji somatosensorycznych i strategię stawu biodrowego. Otrzymane ilościowe zależności pomiędzy parametrami układu równowagi ciała ocenianymi w badaniu CDP a BMI wskazują na niekorzystny wpływ nadwagi i otyłości na stabilność posturalną kobiet w okresie wczesnej starości.

Introduction. In this study, a quantitative analysis of the BMI index on the postural stability of women in early old age was conducted. Materials and methods. The study was conducted in a group of 41 women aged 60-74. The postural stability of women was assessed using computerized dynamic posturography (CDP). The usefulness of signals coming from sensory organs involved in the control of the body’s balance and the correctness of choosing the appropriate motor strategy were assessed. The deflections of the centre of gravity of the body in the anteroposterior direction and the combined result of body balance analysis were determined. Results. As a result of the conducted research, a negative correlation between the BMI index of the studied women and the results of the balance analysis, as well as the results of the motor strategy analysis was found. Conclusions. Along with the increase in the BMI index, there increases the range of deflections of women’s centre of gravity in the anteroposterior direction. In overweight people, worse use of somatosensory information and hip joint strategy was found. The obtained quantitative relationships between the parameters of the body balance system assessed in the CDP examination and BMI indicate the adverse effect of excessive weight and obesity on the postural stability of women in early old age.

The aim of project was to estimate relationship between physical activity, socio-economic conditions and BMI in sample of youth. A group consisted of 177 youth aged 14-16 years from two Warsaw junior high schools. The research included questionnaire information (socio-economic condition, lifestyle), measurements and tests of strength, agility, endurance, flexibility, and reaction time. To determinate the relationship between fitness and five factors stepwise multiple regression was used. The results showed that higher stress level had negative influence on grip strength of hand and agility of shuttle run. Exposure to smoking had a negative impact on result in grip strength of hand, endurance, and explosive power of the lower extremities. The number of people in family had negative effect on grip strength of hand, however lifestyle had a positive influence on number of sit-ups (abdominal muscular strength and endurance). In case of youth characterized by lower BMI category, weaker handgrip and increased spine flexibility were observed. Socio-economic conditions mentioned above had small influence on physical activity

Objectives: The association between psychosocial work dimensions (i.e. demand and control) and obesity has been found to be inconclusive, indicating that individual differences factors might also contribute to explain the variability in BMI. Materials and Methods: The interaction between work dimensions and personality variables in a group of male and female workers (N = 506), and its associations with BMI were analyzed with a cross-sectional study with self-report data. Hierarhical regression analyses were used to predict the BMI levels from work and individual differences variables and their interactions for males and females. Results: The main effects of personality variables were not significant, physical workload interacted with neuroticism for males, whereas control interacted with activity for females. Conclusions: Psychosocial work dimensions and personality traits were related to BMI for men and women. These outcomes reinforce the notion that different models might account for the explanatory mechanisms of BMI in regard to sex.

The aim of this study was the diagnosis of selected somatic parameters and functional parameters of cardiovascular and respiratory systems of rural women in Poland. The study involved a group of 95 rural women aged 35-60 years, staying in 3-week rehabilitation camps. The two groups of women were selected: younger (x=43 years), which did not exceed 50 years of age (n=48) and older (x=53 years) aged 50 years and older (n=47). The present study examines the measurement of the body height and weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and functional parameters of cardiovascular and respiratory systems. For the evaluation of cardiovascular parameters, a 6 minute walk test was selected. Before the commencement of the test and in the first minute after it, the pulse and the blood pressure were measured. To assess the functional parameters of the respiratory system, the pattern of flow - volume curve was used. The test was performed with a Jaeger Flowscreen spirometer. The following parameters were determined: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF) and Tiffeneau index (FEV1 in% VC). Examined rural women were likely to be similar to their urban counterparts. BMI of women was significantly higher than peers. Older rural women are particularly at risk of obesity. Heart rate and blood pressure, when at resting and after exercise, were normal and alike in both in young and older women. As expected, younger women had significantly higher levels of respiratory parameters. PEF values in younger women were slightly below the normal limit, and in their older peers, this value was significantly below the normal limit.

The purpose of the study was to compare the blood pressure of rural-to-urban migrants and the sedentary population (non-migratory) of the city of Wrocław, Poland. Additionally, the effect of time spent in the rural area on blood pressure was also assessed. The study sample consisted of 2753 males aged 25-75 years, following a medical examination, underwent an interview and anthropometric measurements between 1989-90. Based on the place of origin all males were divided into rural-to-urban migrant inhabitants of Wrocław (N=1222) and sedentary inhabitants of Wrocław (N=921). The percentage of time spent in the rural area [(time spent in rural area/age)*100] was then calculated and was used in analysis. In each age category, the rural-urban migrants were found to be shorter in height. Age, BMI, level of education and time of migration had a significant effect on both the systolic and diastolic blood pressure irrespective of the level of education. It was demonstrated that the time of migration, allowing for age, body size and education level, significantly correlated with blood pressure. The later in time, the males migrated from rural to urban areas, the higher their blood pressure. It was hypothesized that unhealthy behavior could still have continued in a new urban environment, resulting in migrant - sedentary differences in health parameters.

Cel: Za cel pracy przyjęło analizę rozwoju somatycznego mężczyzn studiujących na różnych kierunkach w WWFiS w Białej Podlaskiej Materiał i metody: Materiał do pracy stanowią dane antropometryczne 175 studentów pierwszego roku WWFiS w Białej Podlaskiej. Analizowaną kohortę mężczyzn podzielono na zespoły, uwzględniając profil studiów. Techniką Martina i Sallera wykonano pomiary cech antropometrycznych niezbędnych do obliczenia wskaźnika BMI, WHR i oszacowania składu tkankowego ciała.

Introduction: The analysis of literature revealed close similarities concerning morphological features in groups of people performing the same work, practising the same sport or studying in the same field of study. In the present situation of the demographic low and strong competition on the educational market, the issues of the level of education as well as competences and predispositions of students are discussed more and more often. Aim: The aim of the work was to analyse somatic development of male students from various fields of study at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Biala Podlaska. Material and methods: The material included anthropometric data of 175 first-year students of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Biala Podlaska. The analysed cohort of men was divided into groups according to the field of study. The measurements of anthropometric features indispensable for calculating BMI, WHR and body composition were madewith the use of Martin and Saller technique. In order to describe the collected variables, sample size (n), arithmetic mean (x ~ ) and standard deviation (SD) were used. Differences between the selected groups concerning the analysed features were estimated with the use of Student’s t-test for independent data. Results: The findings were in line with publications of other authors analysing the correlations between body build and the field of study. Therefore, it should be concluded that the selection for physical education studies to a large extent determines body build of the students. Conclusions: The observed differences between groups concerning fat-free mass and the level of adiposity as well as its distribution may have stemmed from the differences in lifestyle of the examined men that resulted, inter alia, from their field of study.

Materiał i metody. Grupę badaną stanowiło 41 losowo wybranych studentek fizjoterapii III roku studiów licencjackich. Dokonano pomiaru wysokości i masy ciała oraz obliczono wskaźnik BMI. Do oceny dolegliwości bólowych części lędźwiowej kręgosłupa zastosowano Kwestionariusz Oswestry. U większości stwierdzono niewielki (61%) i mierny (27%) stopień niepełnosprawności. Analiza wskaźnika BMI względem stopnia niepełnosprawności wykazała związek istotny statystycznie (Fniepełnospr. (2, 38) = 8.72, p < 0,001). Wnioski. Większość badanych studentek doświadczyła bólów kręgosłupa, a znaczny odsetek (30%) charakteryzował się nadmierną masą ciała. Wykazano istotny statystycznie związek pomiędzy wskaźnikiem BMI a stopniem niepełnosprawności.

Background. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between overweight, obesity, and back pain, and to verify the correlations between these variables in a group of young female physiotherapy graduates. Material and methods. The study group comprised 41 randomly selected physiotherapy third year students. Body height and body mass were measured, and BMI was calculated. Pain in the lumbar spine was assessed with the Oswestry Low Back Pain Questionnaire. Basic descriptive statistics were determined for the analysed quantitative variables. The questionnaire answers were compared and correlated with BMI. We used analysis of variance and the Levene’s test for homogeneity of variance to establish correlations between BMI and disability. Results. BMI analysis demonstrated that 29% of the students were characterized by excess body mass (17% overweight, 12% obese); mean BMI equalled 24,8 kg/m2. Furthermore, 78% of the respondents experienced back pain, with high and very high intensity complaints reported by 22%. Most students presented minimal (61%) and moderate (27%) level of disability. A statistically significant correlation was found between BMI and the degree of disability (Fdisability (2, 38) = 8.72; p < 0.001). Conclusions. Most physiotherapy students in the study group experienced back pain, and a substantial percentage (30%) were characterized by excessive body mass. A statistically significant correlation was demonstrated between BMI and disability level. It seems necessary to put more emphasis on health prevention in university curricula.

Short term secular change in body size and physical fitness of Polish youth 7-15 years of age resident in an industrial region of Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland was considered across two surveys, 2001-2002 and 2010-2011. Subjects were students in the same schools in both surveys 1892 boys and 1992 girls in the first and 1237 boys and 1236 girls in the second. In addition to height and weight, performances in six fitness tests were measured in each survey. Height, weight and BMI increased significantly across surveys. Statistically controlling for secular gains in height and weight, only static strength (hand grip) and running speed - agility (shuttle run) improved significantly between surveys in three age groups (7-9, 10-12, 13-15 years), while explosive power (standing long jump) showed negligible changes except in girls 13-15 years among whom performances declined significantly. Speed of upper limb movement (plate tapping), flexibility (sit and reach) and trunk strength (sit-ups) declined between surveys, except for trunk strength in boys 13-15 years which did not change. In conclusion, after statistically controlling for secular gains in body size, physical fitness items changed variably over the decade.

The objective of this study was to determine time trends (1982–2006) in total fat intake and changes in fatty acid structure intake in adolescents from Warsaw in view of increasing prevalence of obesity. Data come from four successive surveys randomly selected samples of adolescents (aged 11–15 years old), from Warsaw region. In total 9747 pupils have been examined, with response rate varying from 55% to 87% depending on year. Surveys were done always in the spring season of the year. Food intake was assessed by using 24 hours recall method of consumption by the pupils all products, including enriched, dishes and beverages as well as diet supplements, in the last 24 hours preceding the examination. The content of energy and nutrients was calculated by means of own computer softwares (DIET 2 and 4), taking into account successive revisions of the tables of food composition and nutritional values, as well as current Polish DRI. A significant decreasing trend was found in intake of total fat, of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and cholesterol. The percentage of energy from total fat, also decreased both in boys (to 35,1%) and girls (to 33,7%), what failed to reach the desired level below 30% of energy from fat which is recommended. Also significant decrease of SFA consumption was not satisfactory enough to approach the values <10% of energy recommended as was from 13% to 15%. Decreasing trends in fat intake was not in accordance with the trend in obesity prevalence in the adolescents as average BMI is going up. To stabilize the health-oriented changes especially in the diets of adolescents, further activity is desired from professionals working with prevention of adolescents obesity.

Introduction. In effect of the ageing process, there are involutional changes in older adults both in the mental and in the physical spheres. Some factors may slow down the ageing process. Physical activity is one of these factors. Physical ability is one of the most important indicators of quality of life of older adults, and it can be shaped by physical activity. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess chosen factors that influence physical ability of adults older than 65 years. Material and methods. The study involved 63 older adults. The criterion for inclusion in the study was the age - older than 65 years. There were 37 women and 26 men in the study population. All the subjects were able to walk without assistance, and they had no contraindications to do functional tests. We used a questionnaire of our own design, three SPPB trials, Up&Go test; we calculated the BMI indices and assessed depression scale. Results. We found that older adults rarely engage in physical activity. The low level of physical activity of the older adults was reflected in equally low physical ability level, as assessed by functional tests. We found a directly proportional dependence between body mass and the level of functional limitations and risk of falls. Conclusion. In our functional tests, we found a statistically significant correlation with regard to age and BMI index.

Healthy eating is very important for human life. It has an impact on health improvement by decreasing the risk of numerous diseases. Malnutrition, on the other hand, has far-reaching consequences both in the medical and psychological sphere, especially for children. Schools play an important role in shaping good dietary habits and satisfying nutrition needs of children and young people. To this end, schoolchildren should have access to food and drinks that meet the nutrition standards, and they should have appropriate conditions provided for consumption of such products. To effectively realise the tasks related to healthy eating, schools should undertake preventive and educational activities. These should be addressed not only to children, but to their parents and teachers as well. Such issues were subject to NIK’s audit conducted at primary schools in five Polish regions: Lubelskie, Małopolskie, Mazowieckie, Podlaskie and Kujawsko-Pomorskie.

The objective of this study was to conduct a literature review examining predictors of lost-time injury, illness and disability (IID) in the workplace, with a focus on obesity as a predictor, and to evaluate the relationship between obesity and losttime IID. The study objective was also to analyze workplace disability prevention and interventions aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle among employees and reducing obesity and IID, as well as to identify research gaps. The search was conducted in several major online databases. Articles included in the review were published in English in peer-reviewed journals between January 2003 and December 2014, and were found to be of good quality and of relevance to the topic. Each article was critically reviewed for inclusion in this study. Studies that focused on lost-time IID in the workplace were reviewed and summarized. Workers in overweight and obese categories are shown to be at a higher risk of workplace IID, are more likely to suffer from lost-time IID, and experience a slower recovery compared to workers with a healthy body mass index (BMI) score. Lost-time IID is costly to an employer and an employee; therefore, weight reduction may financially benefit both – workers and companies. It was found that some companies have focused on developing interventions that aid reduction of weight and the practice of active lifestyle among their employees. Measurement of body weight, height, waist and hip circumference is a standard procedure that allows to better define the risk of metabolic syndrome. The aim of the study is to determine the usefulness of anthropometric indicators such as BMI, WC (waist circumference), WHR, WHtR and percentage of body fat to predict the metabolic cardiovascular risk in the adult male population of Krakow, as well as an attempt to determine the metabolic cardiovascular risk with the original anthropometric risk index. The study included 405 men from the population working in the T. Sendzimir Steelworks in Kraków at the age of 30-69 years. Anthropometric measurements: body height measured to the nearest mm, circuits (waist, hips) measured to the nearest centimetre, the percentage of fat (the type of electronic scales Tanita BF 300) measured according to the standard protocol by the same technician and biomedical indicators assessing the functional status of organism, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose and blood pressure measured with a mercury manometer. As a measure of goodness of fit for the indices of risk (and their components), the AUC method was used for the ROC curves to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic test. The results show that significant in predicting the risk of metabolic syndrome are not only standard anthropometric measurements specified in the standards of WHO, EGIR, NCEP and IDF. In addition, it is important to take into account the amount of fat and calculate the cumulative risk index based on all relevant measurements and indicators.
