This article is an attempt to reconstruct the biography of the Austrian painter and writer Hertha Karasek-Strzygowski, born in 1896 in what is now Bielsko-Biała, in the area of the so-called linguistic island of Bielsko-Biala in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This island existed from the Middle Ages until 1945. The article is also an endeavor to sketch the historical and multicultural background of the surrounding reality. This reconstruction is intended to give an insight into this ambiguous figure and her work. The article also draws attention to the fact that, although the author grew up in a multicultural environment, she almost completely ignores the existence of Polish and Jewish nationalities in her immediate surroundings, and mentions Polish people only vaguely and explicitly in a negative way. Surprisingly, she also does not mention the Second World War in connection with Poland, where her family had lived since 1914 and which she visited almost annually as an adult. The way she describes the reality of war gives the impression that it was exclusively a time of torment and fear, brought upon on the German people by the Soviet Union.

The author paid attention to the medieval part of Bielsko-Biała City, which for decades had been practically neglected and abandoned. The constantly growing problems of technical, economic and social degradation of this area were analysed. In the mid-1990s attempts were made to regenerate the city historic core and to restore its proper position and rank, which it should occupy in the minds of locals and tourists. Presenter in the paper are infrastructural, social and economic changes, which took place within this area as a result of the revitalisation process. The objectives of this process have been highlighted, as well as the renovation of buildings. Social problems affecting the residents have been indicated and completed projects improving their situation have also been discussed. The changes of the service function occurring thanks to the process of revitalisation have been described. The growth of the number of service units showed a positive effect of the regeneration, improving the economic situation of the discussed area. The pace of changes is intense. Every year the number of economic entities increases and most of them are located in the buildings and quarters subjected to renovation. Nevertheless, part of this activity is observed out of Bielsko’s Old Town, being replaced by the catering and entertainment services.

The change of the management system after the year 1989, connected with the conversion from a centrally planned economy to the introduction of a market economy, directly influenced the transformation of the Polish economic structures. The most dynamic and noticeable changes occurred in the industrial sector. Besides changes in spatial structure and the partition of industry, the role of industry in economic development of different scale spatial systems also changed. The article discusses the problem of the transformation of industrial structures in Bielsko-Biała. The city is historically associated with industrial activities and had changed its economic character over the past few years. The aim of the paper is to present the changes that took place in the industrial sector of Bielsko-Biała in the years 1976–2005, with a particular emphasis on the impact of the economic transformation processes, as well as the intensification of European integration and globalization processes in recent years. The article also analyzes the impact of the global economic crisis on the development of Bielsko-Biala’s industrial sector. The results of this study showed that the textile industry, which is the main traditional industry for Bielsko-Biała, has become less important, and that now the automotive industry has begun to dominate. The large impact of the influx of new investors, including foreign investors, and thus the dissemination of new technologies and new industries, was the inclusion of (four) parts of the city to the Katowice Special Economic Zone and the creation of the Technology and Industry Park. The conclusions presented in this article are an attempt to answer the question of the role the industrial sector had fulfilled in recent years in the economic development of the city.

Air pollution results in smog, acid rain, ozone hole, global warming, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and cancer, which are increasingly common in children. Children and infants are particularly vulnerable to air pollution because their immune, respiratory and central nervous systems are not yet fully developed. Compared to adults, children often spend more time outdoors, and due to their lower lung capacity, they also breathe more frequently, which means that they breathe in - much more air than adults - in relation to their body weight. The subject of the study is the impact of changes in the concentration of selected air pollutants (particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5, benzo (a) pyrene and nitrogen oxides) in Bielsko-Biała in 2010-2018 on the general health of children and adolescents in connection with meteorological conditions.

In the course of architectonic studies, accompanied by archaeological studies, carried out in the Sułkowski Castle in Bielsko- Biała, 9 tiles from the second half of the 19th and the 20th cent, were found among other things. They were handed over to the Regional Museum in Bielsko-Biała. Literature on the subject of tiles and tile ovens brings very little information on these 19th and 20th cent, objects. All studies generally end with the 18th cent. For this reason it is necess'ary to conduct research on these objects of the 19th and 20th cent. The tiles of the Sułkowski Castle are excellent material for conducting such studies on. The author presents the results of such studies in this article.

The collective work, published in 2020, the theme of which is the culture of Bielsko-Biała documents the rich history of the 1wo-city. The city is analyzed on many levels by art historians, literary scholars and linguists. The publication restores the city`s memory related to the heritage of German and Jewish citizens, erased during the building of the Polish People’s Republic (the communist regime). The rediscovery of forgotten stories, symbols, and many other cultural artifacts is reminiscent of a palimpsest on which the experiences of subsequent generations have been overwritten. Getting to the original text is painstaking work that has been successfully undertaken and completed by the editors and authors of the individual chapters.

The article deals with the issues of religious education, its transformations and geopolitical and ethnic conditions in Bielsko (Bielsko-Biała). It presents the ethnic structure of the city at the time when Poland regained independence as well as subsequent changes that took place during the interwar period and after the Second World War. Once in Poland, Bielsko embarked upon an accelerated process of Polonisation, which stifled German education and led to a rapid expansion of Polish education. In practice, German education was limited to religious education in the Bielski Syjon (Bielitzer Zion) district. Numerous restrictions along with the spread of fascist ideology led to the complete radicalisation of the German community, thus giving the impression that Evangelical education equals German education. Unfortunately, the stigmatisation of Evangelical education and evangelicals themselves as Germans led to persecutions and alienation attempts after the war. The fate of the Catholic school run by the School Sisters of Notre Dame was similar. The accusations of collaboration with Nazi Germany during the occupation and the postwar state policy towards the Catholic Church made the sisters cease their education agenda. Despite difficulties, religious education in Bielsko-Biała recovered quickly after the 1989 political transformation. Today, it is experiencing its renaissance. Schools run by various religious denominations, often scoring high in education rankings, are very popular among both students and parents.
