The problem of clergy abuse – especially as regards celibate clergy – presented in the media leads us to asking about the reasons for the actions of the abusers. This article considers the hypothesis of the disintegration of sexual drive interpreted in an erroneous way. Partial concepts leading to incorrect strategical sexual attitude arise from negativistic, psychoanalytic and autocentric perceptions of sexual drive. In contrast, we highlight positive, personalistic and altrocentric definition of sexual drive as the only possible strategy and the only possible concept – integration of sexual drive in celibate state as the absolute condition for a total self-donating love to Christ.

The Author of the publication departed from the classic division of the patrology periods and applied a mixed chronological and geographical criterion in order to emphasize the ideas that had beed accompanied by the Fathers of the Church and the early Christian writers on celibacy of the clergy. The Author referred to the early fourth century (Counsil of Elvira) and then, by applying the geographical criterion, He examined the development of the whole idea of celibacy in the West and East.

The article discusses the relationship of young engaged Catholics in Slovakia to the various media outlets which they follow. It attempts to reveal which media outlets are considered to be inspiring and thought-provoking and how are they perceived and evaluated by their followers. The author draws from extensive research into the interpretation of Church news and current affairs within the community of young engaged Catholics; therefore, the findings related to media reception presented herein also include demographical and personality characteristics for individual audiences. The findings are also presented within the context of three specific Church-related news stories: the contentious removal of Róbert Bezák from his position as Archbishop of Trnava, the financial separation of the Church and state, and clerical celibacy. The underlying research was conducted using combined questionnaires, both quantitative and qualitative, on a sample of 339 suitable respondents. The research reveals that the most inspiring Slovak media outlet according to the young engaged Catholics is the secular weekly .týždeň, followed by the Catholic television channel Lux. The research has revealed a significant discrepancy between the opinions of the audiences of secular media and the audiences of official Church media: while the former are very critical of Church media, the latter seem to be more reluctant to turn to secular media.

The goal of the study is to interpret the motifs of pudicity, sexual abstinence and virginity in the texts of chosen medieval legends written in Latin on the interdisciplinary level as otherwise they would hardly be understandable. These ideals originated in the antique era and were adopted by Christianity. The medieval texts prefer the spiritual world to the material one as well as virginity to marriage and sexual life and this motif also emerges in baroque literature. The medieval legends were written to strengthen the cult of saints and certain religious practice. They stress the suppression of body and the virginity of married saints to strengthen the practice and honour of celibacy which was established as mandatory for all the priests, monks and nuns in the Western Church of that era.

The article introduces the canonical procedure connected with requesting a dispensation of celibacy in the proper way. After an initial definition of the terminology (clergy, celibacy, dispensation) it briefly summarizes the development of legal norms from the Code of Canon Law from 1917 to the present times. Furthermore, it analyzes in detail the procedure for the request for a dispensation which must be asked separately in cases of requests for release from the spiritual status of the cleric (laicization) both priests and deacons. The article goes on to list the documents which are required for completion by the Ordinary within the instructional procedures before their being sent to the Congregation for the Clergy. Since this issue is not contained in the Codes, it primarily continues with an analysis of extra-canon-Code norms. In conclusion, the difficulties connected with the dispensation procedure are enumerated.
