The article aims at explaining why nowadays employees' relevant competences are believed to have such significant role. It also describes the ways employees can improve their competences in order to establish their position on competitive job market.

This paper discusses the issues of importance and role of employees in operation of gastronomy and hotel services sector enterprises from Warminsko-Mazurskie voivodship. The main objective of the presented studies was to identify the needs in the human potential aspect in the covered sector that have important influence on the operation and development of entities from the gastronomy and hotel services sector. The studies showed, inter alia, that in the evaluation of competences of the employees the employers in most cases find that the employees possess competences at the required level and financing of vocational improvement of employees aiming at increasing the competitiveness of the enterprise was based on own resources of the enterprise mainly.

The article discusses the project e-Academy of Future (e-Akademia Przyszlosci) established by educational publisher Wydawnictwa Szkolne i Pedagogiczne and the company Combidata Poland. The project's target groups are the post primary school students and teachers. Among the main objectives of the project there are preparing youth to functioning in society of knowledge as well as nurturing students' attitude of lifelong learning.

Globalization is a great challenge, especially for interpreters. Unfortunately, the European Union still lacks sufficient standardization in the area of interpreting. This, in many countries, results in market self-regulation, which leads to abnormalities. The author gives examples of some shameful absurdities while seeking answers to questions concerning characteristics of a good interpreter.

The article looks at the function of the personnel consultant as an important partner for modern organisations in solving staffing problems. It details the nature, types and range of activity of outside personnel consultants. The importance of their competences is emphasised and their role is compared with that of internal advisors, who are often managers and human resources specialists. The issue is illustrated with services tendered by personnel consulting firms operating on the Polish market. The greater part of the focus here is on the use by enterprises of services from outside recruiting firms. The benefits and drawbacks of these services are discussed and the principles of effective cooperation of both partners in carrying out the process of recruiting and selecting candidates to be hired are described.

The article attempts to give a brief survey of fundamental changes brought by the Lisbon Treaty. At the same time it gives analysis of the new regulations based on domestic and foreign legal literature referring to this topic. It drives attention to the problems and open questions evoked by the new legal regulations. It does not avoid controversial discussion concerning sovereignty and competences forming a natural starting point of understanding of competences in the EU and their division between the EU and its member states.
