The study examines how confidence in the state affects the establishment and maintenance of budget equilibrium. The main supposition is that in countries where society's confidence in the political system is low there are factors contributing to budget deficit on the revenue and expenditure sides: on the revenue side, there is a greater inclination to evade tax, and on the expenditure side, a temptation to populism and difficulty in obtaining a consensus for reform. The positive link between confidence and budget equilibrium is explored first through statistical analysis of experience so far in the Euro zone, and secondly through qualitative comparison of consolidation in Sweden and in Hungary in the mid-1990s. The main conclusion drawn from recognizing the relation between confidence and equilibrium is that the chance of durable budget equilibrium is small in a low-confidence environment, where cycles of overspending and restriction can be expected instead.

Parrhesia was a right of a free Greek citizen to express his opinion in public meetings and trials. The gradual decline of parrhesia in the judicial and political environment in conjunction with decline of democracy led to a strengthening of its meaning and its shift into the moral domain. The use of the term in the Septuagint usually has a religious undertone or context. It expresses often the relationship of men toward God. The use of the term in the First Epistle of John is very close to its use in the Septuagint. Parrhesia occurs in the First Epistle of John four times. In 1 John 2:28 it means the trust of those who 'stay' in Christ and in a way, it can be identified with this 'staying'. In 1 John 3:21 parrhesia-trust is an attempt to overcome existential moral doubt before God. Parrhesia in 1 John 4:17 brings its content close to perfect love as a result of the identity of Johannine disciples as God's children. Parrhesia in 1 John 5:14 is an existential statement of a Christian's life in God and before God.

The reliability of analysis results is especially important in forensic laboratories carrying out research for the administration of justice. In many cases, judicial bodies issue verdicts based on such analyses. It is therefore necessary to implement a quality management system in the laboratory. Accreditation is the best way to build and strengthen confidence in the results obtained in laboratories. A certified quality management system brings the laboratory particular benefits. The implementation of requirements stipulated in document ISO/IEC 17025:2005 makes the laboratory’s management system more effective as all requirements in this International Standard have been derived from good laboratory practice. The participation in inter-laboratory research or proficiency tests is one of the most important elements of quality control. These programmes are used to assess the results obtained in the laboratory. They may also lead to the improvement of procedures and methods by comparing the results between laboratories.

This paper reviews the issues relating to confidence-building strategies in specific forms of entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector. Managing trust in producer groups have certain personal aspects. In addition to these relationships, (producer group - the environment), the trust of the members of that group should also be analyzed. The main benefits gained by partners in producer groups, through an adequate level of confidence, are: more opportunities to innovate, better response to market needs, longer life and greater chance of relationship commitment and loyalty to the customers.

The article deals with various aspects of the private labels building. It primarily focuses on organic food market in the Czech Republic, but on this market it illustrates the general trends, both in brand building, as well as in the importance of a brand in purchasing decisions. Organic food market is specific as there is high importance of product attributes, which are based on customer's confidence. Many of the important criteria for the decision to purchase (the way of cultivation and processing of food, freshness, taste, etc.) are not possible to be objectively assessed before buying. A brand name plays a large role in the confidence based attributes. Consumers perceive it as a certain guarantee of the expected quality. In the field of organic food there are still not strong brands but there is the space and the need to differentiate organic from conventional foods, in particular. A suitable option could be the retail chain private labels, which are already partially developed as far as for consumers subconscious expectations are concerned. The final part of the article provides an overview of the current offer of organic food private labels in the Czech Republic.

This paper studies the transmission of German industrial confidence shocks to industrial confidence, industrial production, and price and interest rate level in nine Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries (Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia). The main questions the paper aims to answer are: (i) Do shocks in German industrial confidence affect economies in CEE? (ii) Which CEE economies are more susceptible to these shocks? (iii) Separating different groups of industrial production goods (capital goods, intermediate goods, and durable consumption goods), which production group is more sensitive to the shocks? We apply impulse response and forecast error variance decomposition analysis and find a heterogeneous response across CEE. The results imply confidence transmission running from Germany to several CEE countries, most notably Slovenia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

This paper deals with Robert Putnam as a political thinker from a viewpoint of the conception of social trust as a fundamental element of civic community and democratic governance, which is based on his study: Making Democracy Work: Civic Traditions in Modern Italy from 1993. The focus is on one of the key elements of his reasoning, namely the concept of confidence and an argumentative statement of his evolutionary view of building social trust in the civic communities of northern Italy and the reasons for its absence in the southern regions of Italy. Attention is also paid to Putnamʼs normative concept of spreading and building social trust. The final part summarizes Putnamʼs work and its possible use to analyse the prospects of democracy and democratic political culture in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

The paper explores the various typologies of confidence indices and barometers that have been developed by audit and consultancy firms, research centres or banking associations with the purpose to assist banks in better understanding customers’ needs, perceptions and expectations. The study gravitates around the European banking sector, by relying on the customer experience index developments during 2011 – 2015. We follow a twofold statistical approach, meant to investigate whether the index dynamics may be significantly determined by changes in several broad coverage variables, and respectively the presence of a two-way causality between the index and variables included in the sample. The findings obtained are of interest not only for banks, but also for public authorities and financial regulators, as the customers’ confidence index used in the study appears to drive subsequent changes in the level of several macroeconomic, financial and institutional variables.
