Research into the era of the Communist rise to power in this country after World War II ranks among the most significant topics of the history of the 20th century. It is a proven fact that Communists considered the Catholic Church their important ideological enemy. In the process of taking over and consolidating power, an inseparable part of which was also denouncing their enemies, the struggle to take over control of institutions belonging under the administration of the Catholic Church played a significant role. One of the means of attracting certain Catholics to their side in the ideological struggle involved efforts at influencing them by means of selected newspapers and magazines. The authors intend to demonstrate the changes in the content of the magazine Charita in connection with the gradual Communist ascension to power in Czechoslovakia after World War II.

This study evaluates the life and work of Count Zikmund Václav Halka-Ledóchowski (1863–1944) in the context of his biographical background. This consisted of a prominent Catholic Polish noble lineage Lédochovski from the father’s side and the Czech-Austrian noble line of Zessner-Spitzenberg from the mother’s side. He left his hometown of Uherské Hradiště to studying at the theological institute of the Society of Jesus in Tirolean Innsbruck (1884–1887). After his ordination, he became a member of the Society of Jesus (1887–1902). He worked in Styrian Lavantalle, Bohosudov and Prague. He left the order in 1902 and became a canon, first in Kroměříž (1906–1908) and then in Olomouc (1908–1932). He then worked as a prelate and between the years 1930–1932 provost of the canonry. He was extremely active in various associations, press and charities at all of these stations. The life work of Count Halka-Ledóchowski involved the establishment and administration of the Auspice for the Young in Prague (1903–1944), a community which consisted of desperate young people and guys from poor families, based on the social work of Abbé Ségur, Don Bosco and Baron Bethun.

This work is aimed around the perception of values of solidarity in the sermons of St. Thomas of Villanova (1486 –1555). The encyclical letter Deus caritas est of Pope Benedict XVI serves as a methodological base for the identification of solidarity content in the work of St. Thomas of Villanova. The work presents the following questions in preaching in the sixteenth century in Spain: the foundation of solidarity, the role of Christian charity in the solidarity discourse and the formation of solidarity structures. The sermons of St. Thomas of Villanova place an emphasis on internal dialogue and creativity in manifestations of solidarity, which suggests the moral and dynamic perception of solidarity.

The issue of charitable giving has been central to the interest of researchers in the international field for several decades. Charitable giving is closely connected with economic policy and directly affects issues within civil society with regards to the financing of the third sector (non-profit organizations). The objective of this paper is to carry out a critical exploration of the facts based on a review of theories and data sources relating to charitable giving, as well as the volume and structure thereof. The search for and submission of appropriate explanatory paradigms enables the subject of charitable giving to be conceptually anchored, which in turn enables us to determine a theoretically grounded set of variables for it. Following on from these intellectual developments in the given area, this paper maps the current state of empirical knowledge in the Czech Republic.

One of the important questions concerning the theological virtue of charity is the order of charity. It is a simple problem of the succession in the expression of charity in relation to various people. It is obvious that we are obliged to love all people, but they have a different grade of perfection and dignity. It is also impossible to express our charity to all people in the same way and in the same intensity, because our time, strengths and means are limited. This is why the question of order in our expression of charity is so important. The beginning of our considerations on the order of charity deal with the celebrated verse from Gal 6:10, which explicitly provides a preference to people of the same religion. The idea of the order of charity was a standard part of various commentaries and tracts on the theological virtue of charity of the first Christian centuries. This paper is focused on a commentary on this question in the writings of a very important representative of High Medieval Scholasticism St. Bonaventure. His concept is continuously compared with some other important authors of this era, the Dominicans Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas and the Franciscan John Duns Scotus.

The article refers to the request formulated by motu proprio Intima ecclesiae natura, that in every parish some form of parish charity should operate. The logic and content of this request are explained and some support points, which legitimize theologically this regulation, are summarized. To illustrate the actual situation of the Bohemian‑Moravian parishes, some data obtained from quantitative research on charitable activities in the parishes in the Diocese OstravaOpava are presented. The data signals a huge change potential. The regulation carried out by the Olomouc Archbishop in 2015, which defines the connection between professional catholic charities and parishes, is presented and its conformity with the request in motu proprio is assessed.

This study is based upon the most recent Popes’ emphasis on the diaconia of the Church. It distinguishes in this context between two basic questions: the Christianisation of the Church’s charity organisations and the diaconia of the entire Church including its structures. Using the criterion that Christian help is to be directed especially to those who are lacking in any such help, the study assesses the current practice of the Catholic charity organisation Caritas Czech Republic. It points out that Caritas Czech Republic focuses on those target groups which are well secured within the system of social services, thereby missing the basic criterion of Christian help. The study views the reasons for this deficiency in the organisation’s essential mission, this being a phenomenon it calls the outsourcing of neighbourly love.

Poverty and distress have inseparably accompanied the mankind since the very beginning of civilization. In different époques different measures were taken to counteract this state of situation. The attitude of the ancient towards the poor differed, on the whole it was unfavourable, however, in the Roman Empire attempts at protecting the poor, disabled and orphaned children by the rulers could be noticed. Systematic help from the society was started in the Middle Ages alongside with the spread of Christianity, which treated the helping the neighbour as a reward to be received in eternal life. On the territory of Poland the institution, which started the help was the Catholic Church. Monastic orders were looking after the sick, maintaining the hospitals, which in those times offered shelter to the needy, not performing their treatment functions. The rulers, on the other hand, limited themselves only to giving regulations to prevent overspreading beggary. The simplest ways of helping were at that time giving alms and distributing food. Unfortunately, they it was only temporary measure and they did not solve the problem of the excluded as they did not eliminate the causes of the poverty. Not until 16th century did the thinkers such as Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski voice their opinions that it was most important to create work conditions for the poor to enable them to exist. Since that time the value of work and activity of the poor has been underlined in the theoretical conceptions (Mary Richmond) as well as realized practically (Stanisław Staszic and The Society of Hrubieszów). In the 19th traditional charity of Middle Ages was replaced by philanthropy, whose character was more connected with the economic questions. During the time of partitions the economic factor was closely related with the element of keeping up Polish national identity and realized by the Catholic Church as well as by the contemporary society.

The presented study deals with the concept of Christian Charity within the context of socalled CaritasTheology (Caritaswissenschaft in German) regarding the parable of the Good Samaritan. It is based on article 31 in the encyclical letter Deus caritas est in which Benedict XVI mentions this concept, concerning help to those who need it most, in connection with this parable. The study compares the interpretation of the parable within CaritasTheology with his interpretation in the context of biblical exegesis and theology. This makes it possible to point out certain distortions occurring in the interpretation of the parable through CaritasTheology and the inspirational potential which the parable CaritasTheology has for the practice of Christian charity.

For years, there has been an ongoing discussion on social work in the perspective of it being “in-between the social services and the authorities.” The jubilees referred to in this article, 100 years of social work in the world and 50 years since the official introduction of the “social worker” profession into the list of professions in Poland, provide an opportunity to draw attention to the discussion on biblical and philosophical inspirations for what was historically known as charity or philanthropy and today is called social work.

Charitable activities go back to the very beginning of Christianity, but charity institutions were founded since the fourth century. In 321 A.D. the Church was granted testament factio passiva which allowed lay people to cede their property to the Church. In many cases there is no certainty about who the founder of a charity was. However, it is certain that the first founders were bishops. The earliest information about lay founders date back to the first half of the fourth century in the East and the end of the fourth century in the West. The historical sources of the following centuries are more numerous. Also, imperial constitutions, many of which were issued by Justinian, were the proof of charities founded by lay people and they functioned as a safeguard of the instructions concerning charitable activities. Lay founders were given a legal guarantee to run the charity they founded. However, the legal status of the charitable institutions of that time is still a matter of argument.
