Nostalgy and melancholy are among the key concepts necessary for defining the category of memory in the family trilogy of Danilo Kiš. The description of the childhood of the main protagonist of the trilogy – Andreas Sam – is full of both. Despite the fact that the main protagonist grew up during the war, the aforementioned Kiš’ novels are filled with longing for the times past. The nostalgic childhood memories play an important part in the texts and the substance of the protagonist's reminiscences is memorised or exagerrated sensory experience – recollection of the smell of flowers, shapes, colours. This the reason why enumerations (among others) lay such an important role in Kiš’ writings – they somehow allow to store and preserve the past.

Both in the days of Yugoslavia as well as after its collapse commitment has become the keycategory for reading Danilo Kiš’s works. It is exactly the category of the ethical commitment thatbecame the point of reference of discussions about the writer associated with the existence ofpostmodernism in Serbia. It is also the same category that established Kiš’s status as one of themost noted writers of Central and Eastern Europe. The history of attacks on Kiš will be supplemented with the newest postcolonial reinterpretations of his achievements initiated from the position of „commitment”. The presented ways of using Kiš’s image and his artistic work confirm the Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s thesis that ethical purpose of postcolonial research is infact „experiencing the impossible”.

Zarówno w czasach Jugosławii, jak i po jej rozpadzie, kluczową kategorią dla odczytań twórczości Danila Kiša stała się kategoria zaangażowania. To ona, uzasadniając jego status ikony pisarstwa środkowoeuropejskiego, okazała się punktem odniesienia dla toczących się wokół postaci pisarza dyskusji, związanych z istnieniem w Serbii postmodernizmu. Historia ataków na Kiša dopełniona zostanie najnowszymi, postkolonialnymi, inicjowanymi także z pozycji „zaangażowania”,rewizjami oceny dorobku twórcy. Zaprezentowane sposoby „użycia” wizerunku i twórczościKiša potwierdzają tezę Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak o tym, że etyczny cel badań postkolonialnychjest w zasadzie „doświadczaniem niemożliwego”.

The text presents the literary reflections of Cz. Milosz, M. Kundera and D. Kis on Central and East-Central Europe in the light of comparative Slavic analysis. Their views are positioned as phases and aspects in the development of the concept of the region in question. The main focus falls on the dialogue between key texts and concepts of the above-mentioned writers on the subject, including their biographies, émigré and dissident contexts, their historical and cultural awareness. At the center of the comparative interpretation are Czesław Miłosz’s views in relation to Polish historical experience regarding the heritage of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

W artykule omówiono refleksje literackie Cz. Milosza, M. Kundery i D. Kiša o Europie Środkowej i Środkowo-Wschodniej w świetle porównawczej analizy slawistycznej. Ich poglądy przedstawiono jako fazy i aspekty w rozwoju koncepcji o omawianym regionie. W opracowaniu położono nacisk na dialog między kluczowymi tekstami i konceptami wymienionych pisarzy na postawiony temat, z uwzględnieniem ich biografii, sytuacji emigranckich i dysydenckich oraz historycznej i kulturowej świadomości twórców. Poglądy Czesława Miłosza umieszczono w centrum interpretacji komparatystycznej w odniesieniu do polskiego doświadczenia historycznego oraz dziedzictwa Dawnej Rzeczypospolitej.
