The reign of the Doukas dynasty in 1059–1078 was a time when new threats to the Byzantine Empire emerge in Europe and Asia. One of them was the increased activity of Turkmen who were penetrating the lands belonging to the Byzantines. A manifestation of these threats was visible during the rule of Constantine X Doukas (1059–1067) in 1064. We have there an invasion of the tribe of Uzes, who crossed the Danube. They ventured so far, as the vicinity of Thessalonica and the province of Hellas, plundering everything in their path. Their actions surprised the defense of the Byzantines. This attack on the empire was related to their crossing of the Danube, about which Michael Attaliates and Skylitzes Continuatus provides us with interesting information. The main aim of this paper therefore will be related to issues linked to the types of vessels used by Uzes to cross this river, as well as an attempt to assess their boatbuilding skills.

The European Union (EU) is determined to find integrated solution for common problems like environmental challeges and water management. Finding solution for common challenges requires trust and cooperation from every actor involved. This is the basic principle of EU on the question of water management. Meanwhile, an effective handling of the same problem requires stong cooperation and unity in execution that is the adoption of the same goals is not enought, the administration also needs some kind of interrelation. However, the difference in competences of EU legislation on these different but strongly attached legal areas can lead to an insignificant result or just degrade the efficiency of the cooperation. The paper aims to reveal the mass lofty goals and their realisation in the view of administrative reality and future prospects in a Hungarian point of view.

The article treats of the development of Roman cities on the Lower Danube, in the provinces of Upper and Lower Moesia. All these settlements were created in the vicin-ity of military strongholds. After the period of tremendous growth, which peaked in the 2nd century, the cities found themselves in profound crisis in the 3rd to 4th century. The cause of this should be seen in the massive invasions of Germanic tribes, and towards the close of the 4th century also Huns. In the aftermath, the urban and military structures underwent complete transformation, with both ultimately merging into one. This also applied in the case of Novae in Lower Moesia: throughout the latter part of the 3rd, and in the 4th century, the city changed entirely. Novae the castra and the canabae legionis I Italicae, vicus and Municipium Novensium metamorphosed into Civitas Novensis

The Roman fort at Iža was a strategic advanced site of the Limes Romanus/Ripa Pannonica defence system opposite Brigetio, on the northern bank of the Danube. So far there have been no targeted researches about the direct documents concerning supply and communication modes used in this site (in the context of the adjacent defence system). Historical records and early archaeological researches described walled structures with various interpretations (cloaca, pier). According to their position with regard to river course, it is possible to assume that such structures were used for bank defence purposes or as constructions of an independent port. In order to find an answer to this question, the authors of this paper have exploited both traditional and innovative methods (LIDAR, various types of sonars).

In the first part of the article, the author presents a few crucial political and historical events which have an association with the situation of the in 1944-45 Budapest. The politics of the Arrow Cross Party, very similar to German Nazis, led to the mass execution of Jewish citizens on the Danube river. The main purpose of the article is to analyse a short story by the Hungarian writer Mihály Kornis. In The Jewish Danube he raises the thorny issue of the memory of the murdered people, and in doing so creates a blasphemous and provocative text, in which he tries to break the taboo subject of genocide.

There is no doubt that after Augustus, Trajan should be credited with being the most active in the area of urban development. The territories on the Danube, especially the central and lower reaches of the river as well as its hinterland (province Thracia) represent a case of its own among Trajan’s undertakings, which should be associated with the Dacian wars  (101-106). The latter brought about tremendous changes in the social-economic and administrative arrangements in the region, Settlement policy and the urbanization schemes it necessarily entailed played the foremost role in that respect. As many as eighteen towns were established on Trajan’s initiative; these included coloniae which developed in the former locations of legionary camps (Poetovio, Ratiaria, Oescus, Sarmizegetusa), municipia (Ulpianum, Tropaeum Traiani),  poleis built from scratch (Nicopolis ad Istrum, Marcianopolis, Nikopolis ad Nestum), or earlier Thracian settlements elevated to municipal status (Augusta Traiana, Ulpia Serdica, Plotinopolis, Traianopolis, Ulpia Pautalia, Ulpia Topeiros, Ulpia Bizye). Indisputably,  “under Trajan’s rule, the lands on the Danube (including the interior) became the focus of comprehensive and consistent Roman urbanization policy, to an extent unknown since the times of Augustus” (K. Christ). To all intents and purposes, Trajan pursued a clearly formulated, cohesive plan aimed at creating an efficient system of administration in the Central and Lower Danube region. Apart from the institutions of Roman rule, it was to rely on municipal self-governments. Another objective was to develop an efficacious infrastructural hinterland for the troops stationed in the Danubian provinces along the line of the river and to the north of it (Dacia), thus ensuring a base for Roman activities on the western and northern coast of the Black Sea.

The victory in the war with Dacians set off a number of major administrative and administrative reforms conducted by Trajan in the Danubian provinces. Some of the vital elements of the reforms included veteran settlement and establishment of numerous towns – coloniae and municipia. As many as eighteen were thus established in the region during Trajan’s reign.

The article aims at considering Central Europe and appreciating it in connection with the category of the South. This means the change from the horizontal, parallel paradigm, which imposes the necessity of defining Central Europe by reference to the East and West, to the vertical, meridian paradigm, enabling the creation of the myth of Central Europe, where the main reference point are the Balkan nations. A look at the South as a counterpoint to the opposition East – West has its antecedents in the 30s of the 20th century. In the Polish prose created after 1989, especially in the works of Andrzej Stasiuk, it is possible to specify the elements of the myth of the South as the basis of the myth of Central Europe, such as: themes of Austria-Hungary, the idea of civilization of the Danube, the creation of the Gypsies as cultural heroes and the specifically transformed topos of the “poetry of ruins”.

XX w. W prozie polskiej powstałej po 1989 r., zwłaszcza utworach Andrzeja Stasiuka, można wskazać elementy mitu Południa jako podstawy mitu Europy Środkowej, takie jak: motywy cekańskie, idea cywilizacji naddunajskiej, kreacja Cyganów na bohaterów kulturowych i specyficznie przekształcony topos „poezji ruin”.

The article is dedicated to the essayistic work of Claudio Magris, a great Italian essayist and researcher of culture in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Magris’ well-known works such as “Microspaces”, “The Danube” and “Endless travels” constitute the foundation for the discussion. The author of the article extracts important plots in Magris’ works such as nostalgia and melancholy, harmony and disintegration. He carries out an analysis of Magris’ writings bymeans of referring the above mentioned plots to the world in which the author of “The Danube” sees the roots of the most important in his opinion values of Central Europe. It is a world of the non-existent Austro-Hungarian monarchy from before 1918 shown in the context of the fall of humanism, moral norms and absolute relativism.

Autor artykułu wydobywa ważne wątki twórczości Magrisa: wątek nostalgii i melancholii, harmonii i rozpadu. Dokonuje analizy myśli Magrisa, odnosząc wskazane wątki do świata, w którym autor „Dunaju” zakorzenia, najważniejsze według niego, wartości Europy Środkowej. Jest to świat nieistniejącej austro-węgierskiej monarchii sprzed roku 1918, pokazany w kontekście współczesnego rozpadu humanizmu, norm moralnych i totalnego relatywizmu.

The article presents a hitherto undescribed episode from General Jerzy Wołkowicki military career when he was serving in the Russian Imperial Navy. During the First World War, Wołkowicki commanded a detachment of sailors trained in using mine and torpedo weapons. The squad was flown along the Danube River to Serbia in 1914 to place minefields on the Danube and Sava Rivers to limit the operational capabilities of the Austro-Hungarian Danube Flotilla on the approaches to Belgrade.

Artykuł przedstawia nieopisany dotąd w literaturze przedmiotu epizod z kariery wojskowej gen. Jerzego Wołkowickiego w okresie jego służby w Rosyjskiej Cesarskiej Marynarce Wojennej. Podczas I wojny światowej Wołkowicki dowodził oddziałem marynarzy przeszkolonych w zakresie użycia broni minowej i torpedowej, który w 1914 r. został przerzucony dunajskim szlakiem rzecznym do Serbii z zadaniem postawienia zagród minowych na Dunaju i Sawie, aby ograniczyć możliwości prowadzenia działań operacyjnych przez austro-węgierską Flotyllę Dunajską na podejściach do Belgradu.
