The teaching of the Church speaks of the attitude of joy resulting from the redemption, but the literature on joy is not rich. In theological studies the concept of joy is associated with various God’s actions, which a person can take on such an attitude. The elaboration of the described subject was based on the teaching of Pope Paul VI in the apostolic exhortation „Gaudete in Domino” addressed to bishops, priests and faithful of the entire Catholic world about Christian joy in 1975, the richest and most complete expression of the Church on joy. Also in the teaching and statements of successive popes (St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis), for whom also the concept of joy and the Christian attitude of joy is a testimony of faith and trust in God. It is the direct and unadulterated Gospel, „Joyful News”, the evangelization of life immersed in God. The successors of apostle Peter, disciple of Jesus, the propagator of joy flowing from the personal meeting of Jesus. A witness to his life, miracles. He who betrayed and whom he was forgiven. Who, unflinchingly, in the power of the Holy Spirit, preaches the teaching of Jesus Christ. Church shepherds show the essence of Christian joy based on faith, hope and love, which source is God. They show the biblical dimension of the joy, its manifestations in the history of the Chosen People, in the life of Jesus, the original Church, Mary and saints. They do not cease to show the practical implementation of Christian joy in the life of every human being, seeking to develop indications for the moral life of Christians by listening to the word of God, meeting God in the sacraments and doing good.

This article presents the importance of the Gospel in the life of consecrated persons according to the teaching of the Church from Paul VI to Francis. The teaching of Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis point to the Gospel as the norm and rule of consecrated life. There are many points of convergence in the teaching of the post-conciliar popes on the evangelical character of the consecrated life. This issue is a clear example of the continuity of the teaching of the Church. Each of the Popes emphasizes their thought slightly differently, but they all unequivocally demand that consecrated persons be fully faithful to the Gospel. Because of the contemporary crisis of the consecrated life, these recommendations acquire particular significance and constitute a necessary signpost for the future.

The article analyses the issues in question by means of a method used in the legal sciences which in the Polish methodology is called “the historical and legal method.” It involves presentation and analysis of selected legal institutions and of their evolution in time. The following issues-identified across the pages of the Gospel-are analysed in this article: political and systemic context of evangelical events (section 1), the role of censuses in the implementation of Roman administrative and systemic principles (section 2), Roman tax law in the context of tax burdens resting on residents of Judea (section 3) and the Roman judicial procedure in the context of the trial of Jesus (section 4). In the summary the author answers the research question asked in the introduction: to what degree does the historical and legal significance of selected institutions of Roman law, inspired by the description of these institutions in canonical gospels of the New Testament, determine the contemporary understanding of the gospels themselves?

The contribution attempts to explain the meaning of two main characteristics of the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles and clarify the correlation between them. The article analyses the sixfold synchronism in Luke 3:1–2a and demonstrates its importance in the conception of Luke and Acts. Although Luke was not a modern historian, his work indicates how an emphasis on history can serve the Gospel. It is fairly obvious that mere facts are not sufficient and the values behind the facts and events are more important. The most important event for Luke was the salvation brought by Jesus Christ.

The document of the International theological commission Theology today: Perspectives, Principles and Criteria in art. 21 speaks of “the truth of the gospel” (citing Gal 2:5) as to what theology is concerned with. The study investigates the significance of the phrase “the truth of the gospel” in the apostle Paul (occurring in his seven undisputed letters only in Gal 2:5 and 2:14) and in the document Theology today. Although the contexts are extremely different, both perspectives on this phrase are undoubtedly converging. Moreover, the understanding of “the truth of the gospel” by the apostle Paul can be an inspiration and encouragement for theology today.

This article aims to „The true light (Jn 1.9a). Jesus as the light in the Prologue of the Fourth Gospel”, was to explain the meaning of the symbol of the light connected with the person of Jesus Christ - the Logos in the Prologue of the Gospel of St John. The analysis of the text helped to establish that the author wanted to show the person o f Logos as a necessary condition of all life, and above all, the supernatural life (Jn 1,4). By revealing the divine life through the Incarnation, whose symbol is a light, he met with extreme hostility, which, however, is unable to destroy him (Jn 1,5). He is the light in an absolute sense (Jn 1,9). No one besides Him can not bestow the light, which in its fullest sense is identified with salvation. Father (John 5,31-32.37-38; 8,16-19), the Holy Spirit (Jn 15,26), the work of Jesus (Jn 5,36,10,25) and John the Baptist (Jn 1,7-8; 19nn) bear witness of His light, that people believed in him and thus have eternal life (Jn 20,31).

This study synthetically undertakes the main message of the encyclical of Saint John Paul II on the 25th anniversary of its announcement, March 25, 1995. The purpose of displaying and reminding was not only the celebration of the anniversary, but above all the fact that today this document reveals its extraordinary timeliness, perhaps greater than when it was published. Here, the prophetic charisma of Saint Pope John Paul II is revealed. Noticing certain socio-cultural phenomena dominating the world and the ideas in which they had their roots, the Polish Pope decided that it is right and necessary to remind the world about the message that the Church foretells about the mystery of man. This mystery reveals its splendor in the light of God’s revelation, i.e. the Gospel which is the Person of Christ himself. In our time, the Gospel of life sounds extremely loud and requires steadfast, convincing and persistent preaching to the world today.

The aim of the study is to present the poetry of Daniel Pastirčák, one of the most prominent spiritual poets in the contemporary Slovak literature. Through interpretation of his four book of verse, we attempt to name dominant features of his poetry. A thread of spiritual poetry can be seen since Old Slavonic literature, particularly St. Cyril’s foreword to his translation of the Gospels called Proglas. Since then, every period of literary history had active priests engaged in writing poetry, and a short survey of most important names is given in this study. We tackle general problems of writing spiritual poetry, especially the tension between its theological and poetic aspect. A good way to overcome this threatening imbalance is either the use of original imagery or particular human experience with faith as is shown in Pastirčák’s best poems. His philosophical and meditative poetry emphasizes the unity of the world, of man and nature, of earthly and divine. The speaker can see dualism in both: man and the world, combining it with the cyclical conception of time. He proves what is typical of good poetry and literature entirely: that they are able to point to spiritual values indirectly not only by their invocation. The Christian character of Pastirčák’s poetry is supported by his frequent references to the Bible, either direct quotations or paraphrases, or allusions. The diction of many of his poems, mainly in his first book of verse Tehilim, is biblical, too. We try to support our conclusions with quotations of particular poems or their extracts in English translation. The overall ambition of this study is the attempt to offer a relatively complex view upon Daniel Pastirčák as a poet, which, we hope, will contribute to the reception of spiritual poetry in Slovak literature.

In this paper I analyze the character of Judas in the famous novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. In The Last Temptation of Christ, Jesus is weak and full of doubt, whereas Judas is a volcano of energy. Furthermore, the Greek writer of makes his Judas a superman. Only through his help does Jesus fulfil the mission. In the novel Judas is a realist, while Jesus lives in a dream world. Finally, Judas wins, and he is true to himself. Kazantzakis’ creation of Judas is different both from what we know from the Gospel of John, as well as the version of the apocryphal Gospel of Judas. Kazantzakis, however, does not tell the history of Judas as another version of the fall of the traitor apostle, but announces an original version of Judas which stands in opposition to that of ecclesiastical orthodoxy. It is a story of – a man who struggles with God (and even against God) for his own immortality.

In the Lutheran symbolical books, there are two main threads concerning repentance. First of them is present mainly in “The Augsburg Confession”, its “Apology” and “The Smalcald Articles”, it is also confirmed in “The Formula of Concord”. It combines repentance with preaching the Law and Gospel. Preaching of the first leads to contrition, which, thanks to the preaching of the Gospel, is followed by faith. The second thread is present mainly in Luther’s Catechisms and “The Smalcald Articles”, as well as in “The Formula of Concord”. In it, repentance is considered to be an everyday actualisation of baptism in a believer’s daily life, in which the old, sinful Adam is removed and a new man comes into being. In both threads repentance is presented as the result of the Holy Spirit’s work in a man.

When confronting theology with other disciplines we are urged to specify its status as a field of knowledge which derives from its subject, i.e. the faith of the Church. Formerly, under the heavy influence of then unquestionable Aristotelian understanding of science and its division, it used to be very straightforward to find the right place for theology among other disciples. Nowadays, on the other hand, it is a much more demanding task for a theologian who has to confront other academicians. Therefore, more than ever, one need to reflect on the subject of theology, i.e. the faith, which determines its scientific status. The paper comprises of three parts: i) The Notion of Faith; ii) Communicating the Faith; iii) Theology as a Way to Communicate the Faith. The research is based on an analysis of the doctrinal declarations of the Church concerning the faith. The gift of the faith which comes from the Christianity gives courage when facing the secular world and does not allow to fall into despair when coping with its crises and the paths closed for the Gospel. Contrary to that, the faith enables us to confront the world and to communicate the most precious things we have.

The article addresses the importance of the Church’s missionary activity with respect to contemporary cultures and nations because she proclaims the Gospel and promotes the basic development in many corners of the world. By sending missionaries, the Church teaches the faith, Catechism, religious observances, life in accordance with the Commandments. She takes care of Christian formation of the faithful in a given particular Church. The Church organises pastoral and biblical apostolates in order to proclaim the light and hope of the Gospel in a way that is comprehensible to the modern man. It is argued in the article that the proper understanding of the missionary activity of the Church is essentially a realisation of universal human rights. The Church sees the need for respect of human rights on the part of world decision-makers; she appreciates the work of missionaries towards the good of nations and cultures, she sees a common denominator for evangelization and development of nations in terms of human rights. Provisions contained in covenants and treaties which guarantee the right to life and civilisational progress of all people are often disobeyed, therefore the Christ’s Church uses her authority to get involved in the process of evangelization activities and all types of activity intended to improve the communal life of people of good will.

The paper presents the rules for typological classification of Slavonic manuscripts and early printed books with the Gospel text. It enumerates different types of the books with the Gospel and sometimes also with other parts of the Holy Scripture. Information about the Greek tradition of the Gospel is also included in the article and serves as the basis of comparison.

Artykuł Filmowe transformacje Ewangelii. Perspektywa mariologiczna przedstawia analizę dwóch współczesnych obrazów o życiu Jezusa i Jego Matki: pochodzącego z roku 1995 francuskiego filmu Marie de Nazareth w reżyserii Jeana Dellanoya oraz powstałego cztery lata później dzieła Kevina Konnora Mary, Mother of Jesus.

The vast majority of Jan Balabán’s works are short stories. They are regarded by many as dark and obscure, which led some to discover symbolic dimension of his prose. The form of writing applied by the author could have been influnced on the one hand by American literature and on other hand by evangelical way of education he got at home. Typical for protestants was teaching children biblical stories, especially New Testament parables. The analysis of Jan Balabán’ works lead to discover many biblical quotes and motives in his books. He creates some of his stories in the image of New Testament parables and describes some of the characters as if they were biblical heroes. He also name some of them in the biblical way by giving them prefix „no” at the begining of their names. There are many differences between the form of parable used by New Testament and the stories of Jan Balabán. However, some similarities can also be seen. This seems to give his prose some existential dimension.

Narrativity and Evangelization

To evangelise is to proclaim Jesus Christ, that is, to tell people the story of the eternal word of the Father, which became flesh and has since permeated the history of humanity. Christians preach the Gospel with the help of stories, because the ultimate word that God addresses to humanity is the story of Jesus, the Son of God. There is great performative power in novels: although they do not demand or command anything, they prompt their addressees to reflect on themselves and their attitudes, and then to open themselves up to the action of God and change their lives. The Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ, told to the world will move its audience when the stories told to people are true and provide a respond to the deepest human need. Evangelisers must tell the story of God's saving God's saving love in a clear and interesting way, respecting human freedom in deciding for or against Christ. for or against Christ. Such a proclamation of the Gospel guarantees that the Christian message will be listened to and accepted by people with all their souls (cf. EN 23).

The proclamation of the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ is the grace and vocation proper to the Church, its deepest identity (cf. EN 14). To fulfill its mission, the Church must take into account the socio-ideological context that affects both the shape of the message of the Gospel and creates specific difficulties in communicating the Christian truth to people. They include external obstacles, which the Church cannot directly influence. Among them, an important role is played by postmodernism which, as an ideology, rejects Christianity and promotes moral relativism. Other external obstacles are changes in human attitudes resulting from social processes, such as social differentiation and individualization. Evangelization is also hindered by internal factors, that is, phenomena occurring in the life of the Church and of her members that undermine motivation and dampen enthusiasm for the proclamation of the word of God. These include obstacles such as a promotion of erroneous theological views, shortcomings in interpersonal communication and the passivity of ecclesial communities. The knowledge of the external and internal factors hampering the work of evangelization allows a more conscious and fruitful proclamation of the good news to the people of today.

The 16th century was the golden age of the Polish translations of the Gospels. To describe the reality of ancient Palestine, Polish translators used the proper lexis for Polish reality of the 16th century and the proper lexis for Palestinian reality. The aim of the paper is to analyse the lexis concerning meals, clothes, buildings, names of social functions and funds, including the names of people who administrated the finance. The lexis was selected from ten Gospels translated into Polish in the 16th century.

The issues of disability and illness affecting people in their worldly life since the dawn of time awake a varied interest – from negation to acceptance – among societies in various historical periods. The question of disability and illness is present in primitive peoples’ beliefs and mythologies, and in various religious trends – both those that disappeared and those that still exist. This article analyzes disability and severe illness in the message permeating the thoughts, teachings, and divinity of the New Testament books.
