The paper presents one of the contemporary methods of homily preaching, referred to as neo-apologetic. Based on truth, it is meant to aim at the Truth, which is the Triune God. This will happen through the preacher's faith and reason, which will allow each listener to decide on accepting the Truth in full freedom, as well as through apologetics, understood as committed testimony of a herald of the Gospel.

Pope St. Leo the Great has substantially influenced the text of the Confession of the Faith accepted by the Council of Chalcedon and used by Eastern and Western Christian Churches. In this study, we analyse Leo‘s pre-Chalcedonian Homiletic Christology. As a part of our research, we are interested in his thoughts about the two natures of the Incarnation of the Word of God in his homilies. In addition to this, our study offers relevant source translations into the Slovak language. This way, we intend to enrich the previously missing translations of Church Fathers that are necessary for creation of our own Slovak theological dictionary. The homiletic work of this important pope and theologian allows us not only to perceive the versatility of cultural and educational skills of Church Teachers, but it can also provide methodological bases for the research of spirituality of everyday life at any time during the development of Christian culture in the European environment.

The paper studies the place and role of proper names in the theological written homiletic traditions (Orthodox and Roman Catholic) of Eastern Europe of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Special attention is paid to symbolism and to the connotative, denotative and qualitative usage of anthroponymic names. Literary analysis of the homilies and sermons of St Dimitry Rostovsky, Stefan Jaworski, Tomasz Młodzianowski and Ioanniky Golyatovsky, written in Ukrainian, Russian, Polish and Church Slavonic demonstrates that the proper names in their works represent a special supra-phenomenal semantic space. The name cannot be profaned, desecrated or formed artificially. In their tradition, the name describes the referent that is defined in a supernatural, sacral and metaphysical way. It is found out that spiritual literature of Eastern Europe in the second half of the 17th and early 18th centuries is characterised by the highly mystical understanding of a person’s name, which often transformed into a mythological understanding.

The article examines the manuscript collection of sermons of the 17th century „Statir“ (Moscow, Russian State Library, Collection of Rumyantsev 411). The book was compiled by a priest from the Church of the Praise of the Mother of God in Orel-gorodok on the River Kama, the estate of the Stroganovs. The manuscript contains 156 homilies for various feasts, from which the text written for the service in honor of the feast of the Mother of God is selected. The historical context of the choice of the sermon‘s name is explained and the poetics of the sermon is examined. The main originality of the text is seen in the author‘s vivid presence, the idea of overcoming sinfulness is given a personal evaluation by the preacher. The author seeks to create the effect of people‘s unity in communion with the perfect image of the Mother of God. The Precept creates a synthesis of epic eschatological expectation and lyrical treatment of the soul. The sermon reveals individual feelings in line with the biography and personal qualities of the author, foreshadowing the future development of Russian philosophical lyricism.

The aim of the study is to analyse the text of the homily spoken by the bishop of Nitra, Monsignor Viliam Judák, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius pilgrimage on the 5th July 2020 in Nitra, and to identify the elements which directly follow the line of Cyrillo-Methodian preaching tradition in its form and content. The preaching tradition of the saints is based on two aspects: the act of preaching per se (traditio activa) and the content of preaching (traditio passiva). The detailed exploration of the bishop’s homily is grounded in the clearly defined “Cyrillo-Methodian” criteria which preaching should have according to the contemporary documents of the Magisterium. The first part of the study presents the analysis of the relevant part of Pope Francis’ exhortation Evangelii gaudium (2013) which relates to the homily, as well as the analysis of the written work by Sts. Cyril and Methodius which can be considered both in the narrow and wider sense as the Cyrillo-Methodian legacy of preaching. The analysis shows that most criteria used in contemporary preaching of new evangelization are present in the work of the Slavic missionaries especially as structural features: relatedness to liturgy, comprehensibility and clarity, expressiveness, rootedness in the culture of recipients and in Biblical culture, kerygmatic trinitarianism and focus on salvation in Christ. In the second part of the study, the application of the specified criteria on the homily of Monsignor Judák from the 5th July 2020 confirms that the homily is in terms of its formal features characterized by Cyrillo-Methodian comprehensibility, and in the features of the content it is characterized by Cyrillo-Methodian advocacy of moral principles, and above all by existential rootedness of Christians in the New Testament, especially in its moral doctrine which promotes an active and responsible attitude of believers and supports the common good of the nation, in its temporal as well as in the eternal dimension.

The author bases on the Popes adhortations Sacramentum caritatis and Verbum Domini. The Pope pays attention to the subject of a homily, its functions and features. Following the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, he recalls the unity of God and His Word, which makes a preacher particularly responsible for what he says. Benedict XVI treats the homily as a part of the liturgy and points out its three functions: integrative, preparatory and updating. The preacher cannot make the Word of God his own ‘property’, spread his private opinions, focus on subjects not inspired by the liturgy or not corresponding with the Church’s teaching. The homily should be concrete, conveyed with the language to be clear for everyone and putting the person of Jesus in the centre. The preacher’s involvement in what he says is very important and the well updated Gospel strengthens the faith, brings joy and spurs into mission.

Archbishop of Esztergom and Cardinal Alexander Rudnay (1760 – 1831) achieved a successful church career not only thanks to his theological erudition, language and diplomatic skills, synodal as well as philanthropic activities, but also through his sermons. The English translation and analysis of his first sermon conceived in four languages (Latin, German, Slovak, Hungarian) and published in 1833 in an edition of his 82 sermons collected from 1778 to 1805 under the title „Kázne prihodné...“ points to the development of Rudnay’s personality, vision and faith or the multi-ethnic character of modern Hungary. The central theme of the sermon was the miraculous act of Jesus Christ, when the hungry people who followed him for three days were fed by the multiplication of the seven loaves of bread. The text does not lack references to the Book of Exodus, the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, the Book of Psalms, the Gospel of Mark, the Gospel of Matthew and the Letters of St. Paul. Choice of the central theme, examples and arguments used, adherence to scholastic principles, emotional colouring, realization of own individual, warning against materialism and the importance of spiritual values, and the challenge not to sin again must have had a sophisticated and systematic effect on the recipient at the time and testify to Rudnay’s conscientiousness and dexterity already at a young age.
