The elimination of all forms of discrimination between the sexes is not only a fundamental human right but it also is very important to support all other areas of development, particularly sustainable development. The aim of this study is to empirically investigate the role of information and communication technologies on employment inequality in Turkey. Therefore, the relationship between ICT applications and female labour force participation is investigated with the auto regressive distributed lag (ARDL) model and impulse response analysis. The results showed that there is no association between information and communication technologies and the female labour force participation rate for the period 1988–2018. These findings may suggest that developing countries also need to have a certain level of development in other areas such as democracy, fundamental rights and freedoms and the rule of law to benefit from the opportunities that information and communication technologies offer to empower the whole society including women.

ESP courses have been considered as crucial for the academic training of future professionals in different areas of knowledge. Their broad spectrum mainly includes the mastery of a foreign language, the learning of specific terminology, and the development of skills related to students’ career needs. Recent research has examined the implementation of the task-based language teaching approach, the design and accomplishment of projects, and the use of technology for the enhancement of digital competence. Nevertheless, few studies have addressed the combination of these three key elements in the ESP class and its effects on students’ motivation. This study examines the effects of merging of project-based learning sequenced into different communicative tasks on ESP students’ motivation. A research project was designed and structured in communicative tasks integrating the use of YouTube as a source of multimodal input. To measure motivation, an adaptation of the intrinsic motivation questionnaire was administered to students. Results reveal high mean scores in the motivation subscales studied along with positive correlations between motivation and participants’ academic performance. These findings may contribute to the body of research that appraises the value of merging different teaching methodologies and approaches for the teaching and learning of ESP disciplines.

Ukraine is making a remarkable effort to match the current global educational tendencies. New technologies and the Internet are being implemented in all spheres of educational activity, including higher medical education. However, despite the proved importance of the Internet and ICTs implementation in learning, there is a gap in understanding the students' interests as well as the current state of Web-technologies usage in studying. In order to determine the experience of ICTs usage for learning purposes by medical students and highlight the present problems of e-learning development in Ukraine, the study was carried out at Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University. The survey involved 139 medical students of first through sixth year of study within three specialties, namely: general medicine, pediatrics, medical and prophylactic care. The results of the survey show that Internet and its technologies are mainly used as the accessory means of study. Medical students search, overview and learn a dditional information including professionally-oriented one (83%, 116/139). Taking into account a high level of trust (7.6/10) to the Internet and the tendency of the students to discuss information from Internet with their colleagues (96%, 134/139) rather than professionals (65%, 90/139) the following situation could have negative consequences in their future professional activity due to the possible presence of incorrect information in such resources. Students’ interest in the usage of different Internet sources for additional learning material forms the background and stimulus for the faculty to provide the possibility of using these resources in the process of study. The primary educational tasks promoting the e-learning development in Ukraine might be the selection, recommendation and development of highly-qualitative Internet sources and materials, as well as the usage of institutional web-sites and social media pages for teaching and learning purposes.

Aim. This article presents an ethnographic exploration of technology use among migrants. The main question explored is how migration processes are mediated by communication between migrants and their support network, considering the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Methods. Multi-situated and virtual ethnography have allowed researchers to access and obtain relevant discourse on the experiences, perceptions, and strategies of migrants in a non-invasive way. Results. In pre-digital contexts, support networks of friends and family provided sources of information in the development of migration projects. With the spread of technology, Facebook’s virtual communities are a means of facilitating migration strategies. Likewise, ICTs bring migrants and their families closer to the “there”, bolstering their bonding social capital and therefore their emotional well-being. Despite the language barriers, and the stereotypes and prejudices held by native-born residents, virtual social networks allow migrants to strengthen their bridging social capital, facilitating the integration of different Latin American migrant groups in the destination society. Conclusion. Today, ICTs have transformed migration strategies and expanded bonding social capital, allowing migrants to share common interests with their family setting, despite the distance. Limited interaction between migrants and native-born residents restricts bridging social capital, but the virtual sphere allows the Latin American diaspora to pursue common interests and overcome cultural barriers.

Has the size of personal networks changed since the invention of the Internet? We use a unique longitudinal survey during the primary period of Internet diffusion in Africa and Asia to address three questions. First, has the overall size of professional networks changed? Second, has there been a shift in the kinds of relationships people maintain? Third, are there identifiable patterns in the nature of the shifts over time? We analyze data on nine professional linkages reported by a population of scientists and educators in Kenya, Ghana, and the Indian State of Kerala over a sixteen year period (1994-2010). Results show that extended personal networks experienced a dramatic decline during the initial diffusion of new communication technologies, followed by partial recovery. An increase in collaboration has been accompanied by a decline in friendship.

The paper, mostly empirical in nature, investigates issues on cross-national new information and communication technologies (ICTs) adoption patterns and growth directions. In the period of 2000–2010, a great number of countries underwent substantial changes on the field of ICTs implementation. Many of them made a great “jump” starting with almost “zero level” of ICTs adoption in the year 2000 and during the ten- year period were implementing ICTs at an astonishingly high pace. Despite the obvious positive impact that ICTs have on overall society and economy condition, rapid changes can also generate higher inequalities on the field. The paper focuses mainly on capturing these changes. It also aims to confirm or reject the hypothesis on growing inter-country inequalities in ICTs adoption. The target of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we explain the magnitude of past and present differences in digitalization level among countries; secondly, we concentrate digital technology convergence. We apply three approaches to convergence— _-convergence, _-convergence and quantile-convergence (q-convergence), to check if relative division between countries was growing or diminishing in the time span of 2000 to 2010. Additionally, we check if countries of a given sample tend to form convergence clubs in the relevant years. The analysis is run for the sample consisted of 145 economies and the time coverage is 2000–2010. All data applied in the research is drawn from the International Telecommunication Union statistical databases [see www.itu.int].

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused an exponential change in the educational environment. The impact of epidemiological situation has been so powerful, that it can be considered that a new paradigm has been born based on semi-presence as new didactic normality. We witness the new and accelerated context where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have acquired a greater role than they used to ever have. Under this new perspective, which also involves a strong reflection on the teaching-learning processes, a review of existing technological resources and their functionality at present is proposed. Taking all of this into consideration, during the beginning of the 21st century the technological advances in the field of education have been significant. Management platforms, resources on the Internet, or other media and simultaneous interaction are some of the key tools in a world immersed in a rethinking that goes far beyond a classroom.

We are witnessing a time of social transformation, as part of a new economy based on knowledge and technological and globalized context. Conceptually, this context has evolved from the idea of “Information Society”, related more to the development of technological resources, to the “Knowledge and Learning Society” focused on ways to construct knowledge and a common culture. Consequently, the name of “Information / learning / knowledge” Society is not a trivial matter, even they are overlapped in the scientific literature of recent times. It is nothing but a demonstration of how ICTs are having an effect at the dizzying speed of social processes and the training needs of the citizens, whose human capital and skills are increasingly valued.
