The studies on the history of phraseology usually examine idioms that either expired or have survived until nowadays. We rarely hear about changes of meaning of idioms. Phraseological units, as stable combinations of words, are more resistant to change of meaning than individual lexemes. In the article the authoress investigates the idioms that underwent different kinds of semantic transformations in the course of time. Changes of meaning are the starting point to show the causes that determine those changes. They occur most frequently as a result of the obliteration of the primary motivation of an idiom (demotivation). The changes of the extralinguistic reality are closely related to this aspect. With the same frequency, competing phraseological synonyms and variantability of phraseological units decide about the change of semantic values. The significant cause of changes of meaning lies also in the modification of the formal structure of idioms, including proverbs. To some extent, changes of meaning assure the stability of phraseological units.

The author describes the development of teaching Czech for foreigners from 1989 to present. She depicts the main milestones of development – the reflection of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, reference level descriptions for Czech as a foreign language, etc. In order to present the situation of Czech as a foreign language in the Czech Republic she also describes the two concepts of teaching Czech for foreigners – one reflecting and the other not reflecting the prerequisites of the learner.

The aim of this article is to present the role of conceptual metaphors in motivating meaning(s) of selected idiomatic expressions. According to the cognitive paradigm, meaning equals conceptualization and the function of metaphors is to facilitate cognitive processes. Thus, the semantic pole of, at least some, metaphorical expressions and idioms can be derived from the scope of metaphor, which, by the same token, constitutes the general meaning of idiomatic expressions. However, contrastive studies seem to substantially delimit the range of metaphorical motivation. Namely, it appears that experiential primacy should be given to image-schematic and ontological metaphors, which emerge as most universal in cross-linguistic studies.

Press horoscopes are texts that include prophecies to be interpreted by the reader and adjusted to his or her own individual situation. The structure, vocabulary and syntax of horoscopes are characterized by stereotypy and conventionalism. Therefore, all kinds of linguistic schemata, colloquial expressions, idioms, collocations and proverbs can well be applied. This paper shows the forms and functions of such phrases in German and Polish horoscopes.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the presence of numerical concept in phraseological units in Polish as well as to compare them with their Spanish equivalents. The comparative analysis allows us to assess what numbers are usually represented in the phraseology of the two languages, what is the representation of non-linguistic phenomena and whether the numbers carry similar connotations. The objects of our interest are cardinal and ordinal numbers found in stable word-groups typical of everyday language. Due to the large amount of phraseological material, the article is limited to determining the equivalents of word-groups in Spanish, without describing them in terms of ethnolinguistics and therefore without rich and complex symbolism of numbers.

Some Remarks on the Relation between Onymic and Phraseological Motivation Making use of a theory of lexical motivation (J. Furdík, 2008), the paper deals with the relation between onymic motivation (OM) and phraseological motivation (PM) (proper names are onymically motivated, idioms are phraseologically motivated). The relation between OM and PM can be viewed as incompatible. The incompatibility results from the fact that there’s no lexical unit being both proper name and idiom at the same time. However, this statement does not mean that there’s no interconnection between the analyzed two types of motivation. Their interaction and co-operation is manifested in several ways, one of which is the problem of a proper Acta onomastica LI, 2 Stat530 i name functioning as a component of idiom. The second part of the paper pays attention to a special type of proper names (as components of idioms) that can be perceived as hybrid units with both appellative and onymic features. These units were coined by means of contamination of a proper name and an appellative on the basis of paronymy.

The aim of this paper is to study the phrasemes, which appear to be very relevant elements in the process of translation, as well as their translation modalities. The examples that belong to the corpus of this study are taken from German literary texts and their direct translations into Albanian. The central focus of the paper is to identify the problems which appear during the literary translation of phrasemes since one doesn’t deal only with the simple transfer of the particular text content. Preservation of the emotional, expressive and stylistic connotation should be stressed, too. Moreover, the paper will analyse certain expressions which the translators have made use of during the translation process of phraseological units from German into Albanian.
