Te year 2008 was named by the European Commission the Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Celebrations of the Year were intended to: respect and promote cultural diversity, support the idea of solidarity, ensure equal opportunity to the inhabitants of the EU, build partner relations with member EU countries and with the countries from outside the Community. Tis article is a short presentation of main events of the Year of Intercultural Dialogue in Poland. Tis paper draws attention to cultural pluralism and as to how cultural pluralism is implemented by the media. How the idea and the events of Year of Intercultural Dialogue were presented by media in Poland. Moreover, this paper analyzes how journalists contributed to promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Tis study is based on policy documents, reports of governments, NGO’s and international organizations, academic literature and content analyses of media in Poland.

MEETING THE 'OTHER' IN THE INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE

The word dialogue is becoming very popular nowadays, but it is also being abused. Quite often every talk is described as a dialogue, though the talk to be called a dialogue should fulfill some criteria. Some of the dialogue's features are: the search for the common view of certain matters, the confrontation of attitudes, acquaintance with the argumentation and activities of the participants, also asking questions and giving the answers. The essential is the skill of patient listening, the will to communicate, mutual respect and acceptation. For Ethnologists/Cultural Anthropologists the most important is the intercultural dialogue. It allows the better understanding of how 'Others' perceive the world, helping this way to avoid prejudices, intolerance and looking at the world by the prism of stereotypes. The authoress points out the relationship between intercultural dialogue, the tolerance and acceptation. She focuses on the role played by the dialogue in the evolution of societies and conditions which make it difficult or even impossible. Significant section of the article discusses the interdenominational dialogue.The article describes the features, aims and levels of such dialogue The relation to the other human and the way we perceive ourselves in such relation determine the adoption of certain attitude towards the dialogue. The ability to listen the 'Others', necessary to lead the dialogue is a testimony of the high regard for 'Them'. There is an urgent need to pass from theoretical discussions over the dialogue's nature to social practice. EU Parliament announced 2008 as the European Year of the Intercultural Dialogue. The authoress points out this initiative didn't gain prominence and was not popularized (e.g. by media).It seems like the chance to spread the idea of intercultural dialogue was wasted. Even though the dialogue is considered to be one of the European values, a distinguishing feature of Europe, we experience too little manifestations of it in social practice. The authoress presumes this situation is going to change rapidly as researchers' interests in the various forms of dialogue will soon intensify.

In this article the author tries to answer the question what are the internal and external conditions for intercultural dialogue are, with particular emphasis on the fringes of the Podlaskie region. As part of the introduction the author introduces and defines a new concept, cultularisation. Then, on the basis of the concept of intercultural dialogue as social dialogue, the author sets out the basic conditions of illustrating examples of the Podlaskie region.

Almost a year has passed since the start of the large-scale Russian invasion into Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Millions of Ukrainian refugees were forced to leave their country. They were received by neighbouring states as a gesture of solidarity. Many refugees were granted status, housing and other opportunities in the Slovak Republic. Now it is time to sum up the results of the social adaptation of Ukrainians in the country, because the first stress of acculturation has passed. This issue is important now both for Ukrainian refugees and for Slovak citizens, especially for volunteers and officials. Despite its timeliness, the topic has not been a subject of a special study neither in Slovakia nor abroad. Therefore, the aim of the article is to determine the main barriers which obstruct processes of intercultural communication and social adaptation of Ukrainian refugees. The research is based on the results of interviews with Ukrainian refugees and analysis of questionnaires combining with the author’s personal experience in this field. The types of adaptation problems and barriers for Ukrainian refugees, such as economic, socio-cultural and legal, have been identified. The detailed analysis of them may help to improve the social adaptation of refugees, to intensify intercultural dialogue and to reduce the social tension.

A lecture of German indologist Heinrich Zimmer about the Goddess Kali inspired Thomas Mann to write a novella 'Die Vertauschten Köpfe' (The Transposed Heads). The author himself did not make a great fuss of the fact that he didn't deem the work important. He considered it just a divertissement and intermezzo. The work shares some common themes and features with Mann's major works. Nevertheless, the author of the study is interested in its potential in the intercultural dialogue and shows how Mann transformed the Indian original of the story, and consequently confronts the ideological content of the novella with concepts of Indian thought. The novella deals with the problem of spirit (Geist) and nature (Natur); intellect and beauty are further terms that qualify the dichotomy Mann is concerned about. The author of the study compares Mann's concepts of spirit and nature with Indian concepts of 'kama' and 'buddhi' that he sees as their possible equivalents. The author of the study concludes that despite the milieu in which the story is set, the novella is truer to Schopenhauer's philosophy, which was a constant influence on Mann, than to Indian concepts and values. The dilemma between spirit and nature as Thomas Mann expounds it, is alien to Indian thought. The novella is thus problematic in that sense that it creates a false image of Indian culture.

A man lives in the world and the development of his personality is dependent on his environment. We are formed by individual cells of the society and the recognition is the way how they accept us, how we perceive ourselves. Our personalities, our identities are influenced by education offered to us by our environment which has been to some extend chosen by us, by educational system and legal environment. The others are significant to us - they influence the way we see the world and it is questionable how our own identities are influenced by us. We live in a world, which is dependent on a dialogue. Our perception of the world is not the only one and therefore we meet various perspectives how to look at different cultures and eventually on their rights, as well. In spite of us admitting individual differences, we accept antidiscrimination measures and laws that only get the bred in danger under protection but in no way do they create conditions for reasons why we should respect the others. In spite of us inspiring and enriching our perspectives, we only seek universal features which can eventually justify whatever of our interventions into cultures which we do not understand at all. A dialogue must be based on the recognition, including recognition of the rights.
