Since the beginning of the Twentieth Century, internationallyrenowned stages and festivals have welcomed Spanish playwrights by giving them the recognition they deserved. Not only has the subtitling technique helped to kindle the audience’s curiosity, but it has also significantly influenced and enriched the alternative creations offered by Rodrigo García, Óscar Gómez Mata and Angélica Liddell, in addition to promoting their dissemination. Yet did audiences receive their work in the same way in every country? Did the artists adapt their plays for the countries where they were performed?

The article is concerned with the first part of the novel Anton Reiser (1785–1790) by Karl Philipp Moritz in relation to the melancholy and body discourse and connection with the book madness as a cultural phenomenon in the 18th century. The so-called book madness is not seen here as a cause of failure but as a method of self-therapy and a means of combating melancholy in childhood. The article focuses on Anton Reiser’s early childhood and his early reading matters. It explores the question whether book reading could be presented as an intertextually anchored self-therapy attempt and compensation of needs and how the novel presents the methods of dealing with emotionality.
