The aim of the paper is to introduce a tool that has recently been developed at the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, the Treq Translation Equivalents Database, and to explore its possible uses. These range from simple, one-shot probes while searching for an equivalent expression for a target language to more sophisticated and elaborate corpus-assisted translations. A significant advantage of Treq is the possibility of clicking on any equivalent and immediately verifying its individual occurrences in context — and thus being able to more easily distinguish relevant translation candidates from misleading ones. This utility, which is based on data stored in the InterCorp parallel corpus, is continually being upgraded and enriched with new functions (the recent integration of multi-word units, adding English as the primary language of the dictionaries, an improved interface, etc.), and the accuracy of results is growing as the volume of data continually increases.

In the last twenty years, contrastive linguistic research has benefited greatly from the introduction of parallel corpora; the valuable “bilingual output” supplied by translations “provides a basis of comparison, or at least justifies the assumption of comparability” (Gast, forthcoming, p. 8). This paper subjects the methodology of using parallel corpora for contrastive linguistic research to a critical analysis.

The paper is a corpus-based study of verbal encoding of Motion events in the cognitive semantics framework. First, it introduces Talmy’s semantic typology, based on the way languages code the key component of the Motion event, namely Path (Verb-framed languages encode it on the verbal root, Satellite-framed language outside of it). It then provides an overview of the experimental and typological research, which Talmy inspired, and an overall critical assessment of Talmy’s proposal. This is followed by a pilot study of Motion event encoding in Czech (which has not appeared in the typological studies so far). Relying on what Chestermann (2003, s. 318) calls T-universals, namely quantitative deviations from the target language norm (Altenberg a Granger, 2002, s. 40), I compare Czech (Satellite-framed) translations of English (Satellite-framed) and Spanish (Verb-framed) fiction texts in their ways of expressing boundary-crossing events. The analysis confirms the typological difference between English and Spanish by revealing a wider range of verbal lemmata with the Path prefix v(e)- [in] in the subcorpus of translations from English, but approximately the same number of the verb tokens is found in both subcorpora; this is due to a small number of high freqency low-manner verbs (coding “motion on foot”) in the translations from Spanish. A future comparison with non-translated Czech data might reveal intratypological differences (in the sense of Hijazo-Gascón a Ibarretxe-Antuñano, 2013), namely between English and Czech.

The article focuses on using film subtitles in the process of establishing Polish-Czech language pairs. Research material comes from the resources of the OpenSubtitles website with non-professional subtitling. The research material was analysed using KonText – the main search tool in InterCorp. As a starting point, the author analysed a dictionary entry for the Polish exclamation cholera in a traditional Polish translation dictionary like Polish-Czech Dictionary (Oliva). It presents translation equivalents in translation pairs such as cholera – sakra, hergot, do cholery – do hajzlu, idź do cholery – táhni ke všem čertům, do jasnej cholery – k sakru, do hajzlu, cholera mnie bierze – čerti mě berou. All the translation equivalent pairs have been analysed using the corpus analysis with three functionalities available in the KonText search engine: type of question (typ dotazu), content of the equivalent (obsahuje), and limiting search (omezit hledání). The conducted corpus analysis allowed for the verification of information in the traditional dictionary, but also to find newequivalents that have not been registered yet which could also be used in translation.

The article presents how the Treq corpus tool can be used in translation and lexicography. It also provides a description of Polish, Czech and Russian text resources found in the Interpcorp parallel corpus as well as Treq features. Furthermore, the article provides specific examples illustrating how the Treq application can be used in Polish-Czech and Russian-Czech translation lexicography. The author uses samples of translation including single and multi-word units in order to show benefits and shortcomings of the Treq application.

The article is devoted to applications of the InterCorp parallel corpus in Czech-Polish translation lexicography. Selected phrasemes exemplify possibilities of using a parallel corpus to identify translation counterparts. The examples provided in the article indicate various kinds of limitations which might cause problems in establishing reciprocal equivalence of Polish and Czech phrasemes. The article also describes some advantages and disadvantages of using subtitles, which are well represented in InterCorp, in the process of establishing equivalence. The author used selected phrasemes from Wielki czesko-polski słownik frazeologiczny (Great CzechPolish Phraseological Dictionary), compiled by traditional means without reference to a corpus, as a starting point for the analysis, which demonstrated the value of corpus-based material and tools for creating dictionary entries. The article is a contribution to theoretical research into contemporary directions in the development of translation lexicography.
