The articles for publication in the supplement are chosen from around fifty articles printed in a given year in “Praca Socjalna”. The Editorial Board recommends articles that constitute a significant contribution to the development of social work in Poland and those which may be of interest for readers in other countries.

In her latest book Sendlerowa. W ukryciu [Sendler. In Hiding], Anna Bikont reopens the discussion in Polish literary studies on the notion, borders, and new horizons of biography. Bikont does not reproduce well‑known facts from previous publications devoted to the heroine or stories heard. She presents Irena Sendler in a new light, above all as a woman, a pre‑feminist, a wife, and a social worker. Basing on previously unknown sources, documents, and strengthening the narrative with numerous photographs, Bikont in a sense creates a synthesis of Sendler’s life and activity.

Anna Bikont swoją najnowszą książką Sendlerowa. W ukryciu otwiera ponownie w polskim literaturoznawstwie dyskusję nad zagadnieniem, granicami i nowymi horyzontami biografii. Autorka nie stara się powielać w niej znanych już z dotychczasowych publikacji poświęconych bohaterce faktów czy zasłyszanych opowieści. Przedstawia natomiast Sendlerową w nowym świetle, przede wszystkim jako kobietę, prefeministkę, żonę i społeczniczkę. Opierając się na nieznanych dotychczas źródłach, dokumentach, wzmacniając swoją narrację licznymi fotografiami, Bikont tworzy po części syntezę życia i działalności Sendelerowej.

International Federation of Social Workers in Tribute to Irena Sendler

An introduction to the subject is a brief outline of the history of the Federation’s creation, its efforts to create a global definition and principles of ethics in social work, and its strive to create a global framework for the work in defense of children’s rights. The subject of honoring Irena Sendler by the Federation as a model for social workers is presented from the perspective of prof. Joachim Wieler, who obtained her permission for this distinction. The honoring Irena Sendler with the title of the Most Distinguished Social Worker of IFSW itself took place on July 30th, 2006 at the World Conference of Social Workers in Munich. It is described on the basis of the laudation given by Imelda Dodds, President of the Federation, as well as the account of the laureate Elżbieta Ficowska, who was saved as a five-month-old baby from a certain death, thanks to the Warsaw ghetto saving action run by Sendler. The article ends with a review of the memories of the message that Irena Sendler left to social workers and all the other people in the world.

Shaping the Memory of Irena Sendler in Polish Children’s Literature

The paper is an analysis of contemporary Polish children’s literature presenting Irena Sendler (1910–2008), a social worker who during World War II was one of the people helping Warsaw Jews persecuted by the Nazi regime. For her courageous actions in 1965 she was recognized as Righteous among the Nations by the State of Israel. Although her life was an inspiration for Renata Piątkowska’s All of My Mums (2013), the first Polish children’s biography of Sendler was published in 2018 (Anna Czerwińska-Rydel’s Lists in a Bottle: A Story about Irena Sendler). Later Ewa Nowak’s Kto uratował jedno życie… Historia Ireny Sendlerowej (Whosoever saved a single life… A Story about Irena Sendler) and Irena Sendlerowa: Magiczny koralik (Irena Sendler: A Magical Bead) by Beata Ostrowicka were published. The paper focuses on the presentation of Sendler in children’s literature in the context of the 21st century discussion about relations between Poles and Jews during the Holocaust. She became a symbol of courageous Polish people helping persecuted Jews in the time of the Shoah and children’s authors present her in this manner, in most cases resisting the critical approach, as it was presented e.g. by Anna Bikont in the recently published biography for adults Sendlerowa: W ukryciu (Sendler: In Hiding). The analysis shows how contemporary Polish children’s literature interferes with political and historical debates about the contentious issue of Polish-Jewish relations during World War II.
