Jan Karnowski był patriotą kaszubskim i pomorskim, a po odrodzeniu państwa polskiego propagował ideę ścisłej łączności Pomorza z Polską. W swojej twórczości literackiej, m.in. w dramatach, przedstawiał w artystycznym ujęciu idee polityczne i kulturowe, które głosił też w tekstach publicystycznych. Problematyce ideowej na kartach utworów scenicznych towarzyszył, jako jej swoista podbudowa i istotne uzasadnienie, „obraz bogatej materialnie i duchowo kultury regionalnej”. W kreowaniu tego obrazu motywy religijne odgrywają rolę niebagatelną autor Otroka Światowida uczynił je bowiem jednym z najważniejszych składników kaszubskiej tożsamości etnicznej. A gdy uwzględni się jej ukazane w dramatach korzenie pogańskie i chrześcijańskie, byl to może nawet - przynajmniej w sferze symbolicznej - czynnik dla Karnowskiego najważniejszy.

The aim of the article is to show the religious motives (refering to the Catholic religion and the heathen beliefs) functioning in the historical dramas of Jan Karnowski (1886-1939), Kashubian poet, publicist and dramatist. The article describes and analyzes the role of religious motives in five Kashubian dramas: Zópis Mscewoja, Libusza, Otrok Światowida, Kaszebi pod Widna and Wesele kaszubskie. The analysis proves that Karnowski shows in their dramas the role of religious motives in forming Kashubian ethnic identity.
