The aim of the article is to compare the reporter’s skills of Herodotus – the father of history – and Ryszard Kapuściński – the legend of world literature. The main emphasis is placed on issues related to the oral tradition of the acquired messages, literary workshop, travel metaphor and a brief description of the Histories and The Journeys with Herodotus.

Ryszard Kapuściński, a worldwide-known, prize-winning writer, is also regarded as a controversial author. After his death there are still many people who question the value of his reportages and his credibility as a reporter. In this paper I want to examine the nature of his work on the example of The Emperor: Downfall of an Autocrat. I wish to focus on the way he decided to present his observations from his stays in Ethiopia in the 70s of the 20th century, as well as to find the reasons why he chose a particular writing strategy. This paper seeks to explain the phenomenon of these controversies which tend to place the author either in the world of literature or journalism, as in the title. Furthermore, I will briefly focus on the image of Haile Selassie and his authority as presented in the book. Ryszard Kapuściński described the Ethiopian ruler who already had a big influence on people who surrounded him as he had been on the throne for over forty years. The author of The Emperor examined the relations between those who worked on the court at the time as well. It seems that he found the principles that were followed both there and in the People’s Republic of Poland. In my study, I also want to rely on some other sources such as A Reporter's Self Portrait and Travels with Herodotus by Ryszard Kapuściński and Kapuściński Non-fiction by Artur Domosławski.

Ryszard Kapuściński, autor znany na całym świecie i zdobywca wielu nagród, jest też postacią kontrowersyjną. Po jego śmierci wciąż wiele osób kwestionuje wartość jego reportaży i jego wiarygodność jako reportera. W tym artykule pragnę przyjrzeć się twórczości autora na przykładzie powieści „Cesarz”. Skupię się na sposobie, w jaki opisywał wydarzenia, których był świadkiem podczas swoich pobytów w Etiopii w latach 70. minionego wieku, a także na powodach, dla których mógł zdecydować się na stosowanie wybranej strategii reporterskiej. Jak zasygnalizowałam w tytule, zastanawiam się też nad istotą kontrowersji wokół twórczości Kapuścińskiego (literatura czy dziennikarstwo?). Przyjrzę się również ukazanej w książce postaci cesarza Haile Selassie, którego wpływ na państwo podczas przeszło czterdziestoletnich rządów był potężny. Czytając „Cesarza”, w tym relacje pracowników cesarskiego dworu, ma się wrażenie, że Ryszard Kapuściński widział pewne podobieństwa między tamtym realiami a tymi panującymi w Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej. W tekście powołuję się ponadto na inne utwory Kapuścińskiego („Autoportret reportera” i „Podróże z Herodotem”) oraz „Kapuściński Non-fiction” Artura Domosławskiego.

This article is about the reception of Kapuściński’s book Another Day of Life which was translated and published in Macedonia in 2017. This text explains the reasons of the delayed translation of Kapuściński’s book and the social environmentsurrounding its reception, as well as the reception of the reportage as a literary genre in Macedonia. Those are part of the reasons why this literary master has passed by almost unnoticed in this culture and his works are pushed aside from the main literary streams. The article also deals with translating problems concerning the alienation / otherness and the way foreign realities are transferred from Polish to Macedonian language.

It refers to the relation between pedagogy of culture and literature, but first of all the hero of this text is a reporter, writer Ryszard Kapuściński. In this essay I want to show how the author’s statements contribute to the achievement of the objectives underlying the pedagogy of culture. The statement is an attempt of identifying the pedagogical potential inherent in contemporary literature, pointing to the relationship between literature and education.

The power of language seems to come to the fore, especially in the media world in all its gradations. This paper discuses Polish-German headlines in press discourse concerning the scandalous biography Kapuœciñski non-fiction, with the aim to investigate the degree of explicitness in expressing criticism with the use of negative judgemental illocutions. The basis for the text-linguistic analysis is the illocution structural analysis method developed further by H. Lenk and adapted to analysing press headlines.  The article examines the usefullness of this method, pointing out its advantages and shortcomings, as well as other aspects, which can be meaningful while analysing theheadlines.

Zaledwie kilka lat po śmierci Ryszarda Kapuścińskiego powstała kontrowersyjna biografia autorstwa Artura Domosławskiego „Kapuściński non-fiction“, w której autor zakwestionował wiarygodność mistrza reportażu. Kontrowersyjny temat, podjęty przez wielu dziennikarzy na całym świecie niemal natychmiast po ukazaniu się książki, stał się źródłem dyskursu prasowego o międzynarodowym zasięgu. W niniejszym artykule podjęta zostanie próba ukazania debaty na temat książki Domosławskiego z perspektywy lingwistycznej oraz uzasadnienia jej z punktu widzenia lingwistyki dyskursu. Z uwagi na fakt, iż szczegółowa analiza całego korpusu badawczego obejmująca poszczególne perspektywy badawcze przekracza objętość pojedynczego artykułu, skoncentruję się na małym wycinku tak złożonego obiektu badawczego, a mianowicie na temacie, względnie tematach dyskursu. Postawię ponadto pytanie o ilość tematów w analizowanym dyskursie oraz zajmę się problemem rozwinięcia tematów w obrębie badanego dyskursu. Rozważona zostanie także kwestia pozycji i roli poszczególnych tematów w pojedynczych tekstach prasowych, (ale też na tle całego dyskursu) oraz ich wzajemne relacje. Ważne jest też niewątpliwie pytanie, czy w obydwu analizowanych obszarach badawczych dadzą się wyróżnić tematy szczególnie chętnie podejmowane przez dziennikarzy obu krajów.

Just a few years after Kapuściński’s death the controversial biography by Artur Domosławski, “Kapuściński non-fiction”, questioned the credibility of ‘the master of reportage’. This controversial topic, undertaken by many journalists around the world, became a source of international press discourse almost immediately after the book was published. This article attempts to present the debate on Domosławski’s book from the perspective of linguistics and justify it in terms of discourse linguistics. As a detailed analysis of the entire body of research covering different research perspectives exceeds the limits of a single article, the paper will focus on a small part of that complex research material, namely the topic (or topics) of discourse. Moreover, the author raises the question of the number of subjects in the analyzed discourse and presents the problem of developing themes within the studied discourse. The paper also examines the position and the role of particular subjects in individual press texts as well as in the whole discourse, as well as their mutual relationships. Undoubtedly important is also the question whether it is possible to distinguish topics which are particularly eagerly discussed by journalists from a country in both analyzed areas.

The subject of this article is musicality in selected reportages and one poem by Ryszard Kapuściński. In the introduction there are few words about history of coexistence between music and literature. I stick to the point of view represented by Michał Głowiński, based on his article: „Literary music – musicality of literature”. Then I do a detailed analysis of selected works, where the musicality is clearly visible. The first of these reportages – Wymarsz piątej kolumny – treats about two German women looking for their home after war. Kapuściński presents them with accompaniment of unpleasant, war music, which is the main substance in his reportage. Lumumba is a text about the African leader Patrice Lumumba. He became famous, because he fought with the Belgian regime. In this reportage the musicality is visible in a description of a reconstruction of the recording, in which the politician gives a speech. I also describe a poem about Louis Armstrong trumpet. This poem tells about Kapuściński’s impressions after the Armstrong concert in Chartum in 1960. At the end of my article, I sum up my interpretations.
