Autobiographical narratives construct the picture of the self-identity of the author. Important life events are chosen to create and confirm the meaningful life course of the narrator. The following analysis is based on autobiographical narratives collected among middle and lower class women who lived in Slovakia in the course of the 20th century. In their narrations marginal references could be found on leisure, recreation and sport. Those concepts were a part of the life-style/habitus of middle class people. According to the autobiographical narratives the changes of social and economic life conditions of the lower class - rural population in the second half of the 20th century showed itself also by tendencies to get closer to the life style which included recreation, leisure, sports and travel.

What did the burghers of Besztercebánya do in their free time in the sixteenth century? Because of the great fire of 1500, the archive material is much better conserved for the town of Besztercebánya for the sixteenth century. In this period we can reconstruct the free time of the burghers of Besztercebánya. The election of the mayor of the town gave occasion for merrymaking. Weddings and christenings were private occasions for merrymaking but the statutes of the town of Besztercebánya tried to regulate these occasions, too. The most frequent way to pass time was for the men in Besztercebánya to sit in the tavern and to drink and chat. At nine o'clock the 'Bierglocke' (the beer bell) indicated the time to close the pubs. Burghers not only drank, they played cards or dices. Another type of entertainment was the school theatre of Besztercebánya. Another centre of social life was represented by the town baths. The book culture of the town of Besztercebánya was very rich too, the greatest library belonged to Johann Dernschwam, with more than two thousand volumes.

The main goal of the present study was to determine the relationship between youths' leisure activities and their health attitudes. The author also aimed at investigating the connections between the youths' leisure activities and their parents' social background. In addition, she also tried to detect possible relationships between young people's pastime and their value orientations, such as materialism, and their levels of satisfaction with life. Data were collected from students enrolled in the secondary schools of the Southern Plain Region (three counties, namely, Bacs-Kiskun, Bekes and Csongrad) of Hungary. This representative sample consisted of 1114 high school students aged between 14-21 years. Self-administered questionnaires were used to obtain information from students regarding their family structure, psychosocial health, value orientations, satisfaction with life and socio-demographics. Correlation and multiple regression analyses revealed that youths' leisure time activities were related to other elements of their lifestyle such as value orientations and health attitudes. Social status indicators, however, were a more important influence on their leisure as compared to their Western-European counterparts

Free time is one of the significant phenomenon of contemporary life. People‘s attitude towards time and leisure is influenced by the Judeo-Christian tradition as well as by contemporary consumer trends. The author builds on the teachings of J. Pieper and R. Bleinstein and seeks to establish the place of leisure in theology. From philosophical reflections about understanding time he moves to topics of social ethics which are linked with the modern concept of leisure. Leisure consequently appears as an area for the realisation of interpersonal relationships as well as for searching for God, as it corresponds with the biblical idea of the Sabbath. At the end of the article the author reflects on pastoral care in the context of a “leisure society”.

The article treats on the concept of “third states” (as opposed to the other two kinds of states: those of work and entertainment) introduced by Władysław Tatarkiewicz in his treatise On Happiness. A thorough analysis of the passage on “third states” as well as of the very concept allows to see its relevance to the considerations on such important philosophical questions as those of the nature of doing philosophy, the meaning of life, intellectual intuition, theoria or contemplation. The paper consists of five parts. The first part is focused on Tatarkiewicz’s understanding of “third states” as well as on a phenomenological analysis of the concept itself. The second part is a kind of extension of the analysis enriched by Josef Pieper’s interpretation of the idea of leisure which I find very close to what Tatarkiewicz means by “third states”. In the light of the analysis the concept of the ‘third states’ turns out to be very inspiring and useful in dealing with a number of philosophical questions, which is shown in the fourth part of the paper. The final step consists of questioning the above conclusion by short outlining a possible naturalistic interpretation of the ‘third states’ in the light of which the picture of philosophy, human life or human cognition, based on the concept of the ‘third states’ might turn out to be a mere illusion. I do not give a final answer to this question but treat the conclusion of the paper as an invitation to a deeper consideration of the matter.
