Leonard Nelson and Metaphysical Knowledge against the Neo-Kantian Background

Leonard Nelson is known primarily as a critic of epistemology in the Neo-Kantian meaning of the term. The aim of this paper is to investigate the presuppositions and consequences of his critique. I claim that what has rarely been discussed in this context is the problem of the possibility of metaphysics. By the impossibility of epistemology Nelson means the possibility of metaphysical knowledge. I intend to devote this paper to the analysis of this problem in relation to the Neo-Kantian background.

The subject of the article is the influence of the broadly understood NeoKantianism on the assimilating of Kantians ideas of critical philosophy (critical method) in Poland. I would like to present a philosophical and historical reflection on the dissertation of professor of University of Poznan Adam Wiegner (1889-1967), entitled Zagadnienie poznawcze w oświetleniu L. Nelsona (Problem of Knowledge in the Light of L. Nelson, 1925), in which he undertook a critical analysis of Nelson’s problem of impossibility of the theory of knowledge and possibilities of the metaphysics. The main aim of the article is to present the Neo-Kantians (as well as the Neo-Friesians) context of the above-mentioned Wiegners dissertation and to reflect on the reception of Nelson’s thoughts in Poznań. I would like to show that, contrary to the schematic simplification, Neo-Kantian thought had a significant influence on the shape of philosophy in Poland.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest wpływ szeroko rozumianego ruchu neokantowskiego na przyswojenie kantowskich idei filozofii krytycznej (metody krytycznej) w Polsce. Pragnę zaprezentować filozoficzno-historyczną refleksję nad rozprawą przedwojennego docenta i powojennego profesora Uniwersytetu w Poznaniu Adama Wiegnera (1889–1967) pod tytułem Zagadnienie poznawcze w oświetleniu L. Nelsona (1925), w której podjął on próbę krytycznej analizy Nelsonowskiego problemu niemożliwości teorii poznania oraz możliwości metafizyki. Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie neokantowskiego (a także neofriesjańskiego) kontekstu wspomnianej rozprawy Wiegnera oraz podjęcie refleksji nad poznańskim wątkiem recepcji myśli Leonarda Nelsona w Polsce. Chciałbym wykazać, że wbrew schematycznym uproszczeniom myśl neokantowska miała istotny wpływ na kształt filozofii w Polsce.

The starting point of the analysis provided in this paper is a discussion of how philosophical method is understood by Leonard Nelson who draws upon the lines of Jakob Friedrich Fries. From this perspective Nelson points out two ways of argumentation, two methods or standpoints: metaphysical and anthropological, objective-one and subjective-one, critical and genetic, epistemological and psychological or transcendental and psychological. These distinctions find their justification in concepts by philosophers with which Nelson polimicizes defending Fries’ standpoint: Kuno Fischer, Paul Natorp, Wilhelm Windelband, Carl Stumpf and Max Scheler. On the ground of analysis of their conceptions Nelson argues that admittedly they follow Kant, yet Kant — unlike Fries — has not included the psychological aspect of cognition.

Der Ausgangspunkt für diese Erwägungen ist die philosophische Methode von Leonard Nelson, der in seiner Philosophie an Jakob Friedrich Fries anknüpft. Aus dieser Perspektive bestätigt er das Vorhandensein von zwei Hauptmethoden der Argumentation. Es sind: metaphysische und anthropologische, objektive und subjektive, kritische und genetische, erkenntnistheoretische und psychologische oder transzendentale und psychologische Methoden. Solche Unterscheidungen haben ihre Berechtigung in der Lehre von den Philosophen, gegen welche Nelson, den Standpunkt von Fries verteidigend, polemisiert. Zu diesen Denkern gehören: Kuno Fischer, Paul Natorp, Wilhelm Windelband, Carl Stumpf und Max Scheler. Nelson analysiert ihre Lehren angesichts der genannten Methoden und kommt zur Überzeugung, dass sie zwar in die Fußtapfen von Kant treten, doch im Gegensatz zu Fries die psychologische Seite der Erkenntnis nicht in Rücksicht nehmen.

The aim of the paper is to analyze the relationship between the authority of the master and the disciple occurring between the two main representatives of the Neo-Kantianism of the Marburg School, Hermann Cohen and Ernst Cassirer. The analysis is based on the pragmatic-logical model of authority developed by Jozef M. Bocheński within the framework of his logic of authority in application to research on the basic relations taking place in the history of philosophy. The purpose of the analysis is to verify the hypothesis of the existence of the master– disciple authority relationship between the mentioned representatives of the school and to explain its logical consequences of the basis of historical-philosophical research of this particular philosophical formation.

The article concerns the history of philosophical relationships between philosophers and mathematicians associated with the New Friesian School. The aim is to show the complex relationship between the doctrines of the philosophical precursors of this school, such as Immanuel Kant, Jakob Friedrich Fries and Ernst Friedrich Apelt, as well as the presentation of the major philosophical-mathematical inspirations of the mathematician such as David Hilbert. Nelson's mathematical and philosophical relationships with Gerhard Wilhelm Hessenberg and Kurt Grelling have influenced the Neo-Friesian philosophy of critical mathematics.

This review article presents an important, newly published study of Popper's critical method by Zbigniew Liana. The review emphasizes the very high level of the study, points to its originality, and explains why the book is recommended mainly to specialists of Popper's thought. It is also explained how the book manages to contain so many original and valuable analyses in a small volume.

Artykuł recenzyjny przedstawia ważne, świeżo opublikowane opracowanie Popperowskiej metody krytycznej autorstwa Zbigniewa Liany. W recenzji podkreślono bardzo wysoki poziom opracowania, wskazano na jego oryginalność oraz wyjaśniono dlaczego książka ta jest polecana głównie specjalistom od myśli Poppera. Wyjaśniono również, w jaki sposób w niewielkiej objętościowo książce udało się zmieścić wiele oryginalnych i cennych analiz.
