The article discusses the influence of the lublin school of thomistic philosophy on the scientific and cultural life of Poland and the world in the 20th century. The author shows that the lublin university, from the very beginning of its establishment, based its model of scientific life on the philosophy of St. thomas Aquinas. this resulted from papal teaching (leo Xiii, Pius Xi). The philosophy was developed remarkably during the communist era, when the Lublin Philosophical School was formed. it produced numerous publications and created an environment that had a great influence on the intellectual life of Poland. The lublin milieu, based on thomism, entered into an effective discourse with the ideological currents that swept the Western world. in the interwar period, this was Bolshevik Marxism and National Socialism. in modern times, this discourse is conducted with the postmodern current and the neo-Marxist philosophy of the Frankfurt School.

The aim of this article is to present the perspectives for a comparative analysis of the philosophical views of two renowned Polish representatives of existential Thomism. The authors mentioned above are known as the main representatives of the most important Polish Thomistic schools: Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec is the most important representative of the Lublin School of Classical Philosophy, while Mieczysław Gogacz is the founder of the Warsaw School of Consequential Thomism. At the base of this article, meant as an introduction to more advanced analyses, lies the conviction that mutual isolation between philosophical schools is harmful. It shows the necessity of a reciprocal confrontation of research results. In this paper, following a short historical introduction, the Author first presents the main areas in the thought of the two philosophers, which – due to differences in the concepts they employ – are most in need of thorough comparative research. Afterwards, the Author points out the most important achievements of both philosophers and makes an outline of the main difficulties and aporias connected with their ideas. Finally, an outline of further research is presented, which could help to overcome the aporias demonstrated here.

The need to preserve a realistic cognition of the world is imperative for realistic philosophy in the face of idealism, subjectivism and relativism. This paper captures the effort of a philosopher who is “faithful to reality” through his works. The [absolute] transcendental properties of being are real properties of real beings; they are neither empty concepts nor constructions of the mind detached from the existing being. They form the foundation for the rationality of the world without which nothing is knowable. There is also a method proper to the discovery of these properties. This method which is known as metaphysical separation demonstrates that realistic cognition is not naïve cognition; it enables us to discover that whatever exists is a determinate content with proportional existence, undivided in itself and divided from others, as well as a vehicle of truth, good and beauty. It is precisely in this sense that something is being, thing, one, something, truth, good and beauty.

The article is the first part of a brief presentation of a research project aimed at introducing the concept of the existential metaphysics of the person—a contribution to classical anthropology based on so-called existential metaphysics. Firstly, it discusses the roots of this concept in the light of the classical concept of person and of the philosophical thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. In particular, it discusses Aquinas’s significant achievement in combining the philosophical-theological concept of the person with the metaphysical theory of existence as an act of being (esse ut actus essendi). Secondly, it presents the theoretical model of the metaphysics of the person, developed in the Lublin Philosophical School in Poland, as a modernized version of Aquinas’s concept. The particular core of this theory is the concept of personal existence (esse personale), opening the way for new ground-breaking interpretations.

Against the background of the model of the metaphysics of the person (presented in the article “The Existential Metaphysics of the Person. Part 1: The Classical Concept of the Person and the Metaphysical Theory of Esse,” Studia Gilsoniana 10, no. 2) which was initiated by Thomas Aquinas and developed in the Lublin Philosophical School, this paper focuses on the attempt to show the philosophical breakthrough that the concept of personal existence can bring, and points out the most important theoretical consequences of adopting this theory in metaphysics. It outlines the elements of a new metaphysics of the person, based on the concept of personal existence, and hypothesizes about the metaphysical turn this concept could make. The investigations undertaken in the paper lead to the conclusion that not all inferences have yet been drawn from the concept of esse personale, and that the entire depth of the metaphysics of existence has not yet been explored.
