Morrissey, brytyjski muzyk, w latach 80. lider i wokalista legendarnej grupy The Smiths, jedna z najbłyskotliwszych figur popkultury, niezwykły erudyta, swoją twórczość nasycał odwołaniami do tradycji literatury czy kina. W tekstach piosenek The Smiths można znaleźć mnóstwo cytatów z filmów czy literatury, na okładkach płyt zespołu pojawiały się zdjęcia aktorów, pisarzy, dramaturgów. Jedną z największych fascynacji Morrisseya, do czego przyznawał się w wielu wywiadach, była Shelagh Delaney, dramatopisarka brytyjska, która w 1958 r., w wieku 18 lat, zadebiutowała dramatem „Smak miodu”, sztuką jak na tamte czasy bardzo odważną pod względem i formalnym, i obyczajowym. Delaney wpisała się tym samym w nurt nowofalowy w brytyjskiej kulturze, przyczyniła się do rewolucji w brytyjskim teatrze zaangażowanym, ale też wzbudziła ogromne kontrowersje, zwłaszcza w rodzinnym mieście Salford. Tekst Kosińskiej jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób fascynacja postawą twórczą i ideową Delaney przejawiała się w twórczości Morrisseya i jak te dwie postacie stały się częścią jednego uniwersum kulturowego.

Morrissey, a British musician, in the 80s the leader and vocalist of the legendary group The Smiths, one of the most spectacular figures of pop culture, a remarkable erudite, saturated his work with references to literature or cinema. In the lyrics of The Smiths one can find plenty of quotes from movies or literature, their record sleeves often included photographs of actors, writers and playwrights. Morrissey was fascinated by Shelagh Delaney, a British playwright who in 1958 made a debut, at the age of 19, with “A Taste of Honey”, a play that was incredibly bold, both in the formal aspect and in regard to traditional British mores. Thus Delaney became a part of the new wave of the British culture, and contributed to the revolution in British engaged theatre, but also caused much controversy, especially in her home town of Salford. Kosińska’s article is an attempt at answering the question of how the fascination with the creative and ideological attitude of Delaney manifested itself in the work of Morrissey and how these two characters have become part of one cultural universe.

Oscar Wilde’s and Morrissey’s lives seem to be full of contradictions. Their art constitutes a reaction against materialism, traditional lifestyle and social standards, as well as defence of individualism and freedom of thought. So far, their works have been analysed only from a very limited perspective of the tension between aesthetics and ethics. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that what prevails in their art is the state of ambivalence and ambiguity in relation to the issues connected with religion and morality, innocence and experience, life and death. This article aims at demonstrating multiplicity of personalities of the artists mentioned and ethical ambivalences of their works. Taken together, Wilde and Morrissey’s creative outputs present a clash between different spheres of life, the divided consciousness and the split between body and soul. Thus, the oscillation between opposite standpoints and values excluding each other is not only the result of the artists’ personal experience but it may symbolise the paradox and absurdity of the human existence as well.

The works of Oscar Wilde form a link between late Victorian and modernist literature. His art and wit have continued to exert a great influence on other artists. The art of Morrissey, a legendary poet and singer, may serve as a case in point. Thus, this paper aims at presenting Morrissey’s works and persona as a continuation of Oscar Wilde’s artistic legacy. The article presents their attitude to life and to the process of creation. In view of that, breaking with traditional moral code, the artists’ fascination with beauty, their defense of humanity and all possible freedoms, as well as earnestness of their works, is depicted as the key to the analysis of their art. Thus, the writers’ rebellion against society and modern life, along with propounding aestheticism, will be investigated in this paper
