Modelling of a decision-maker’s preferences in multi-criteria decision analysis is performed using weights that reflect the relative importance of the given decision criteria. The determination of accurate values of the weights is therefore of considerable importance. Numerous means and methods are used for this purpose, such as: the entropy method (i.e., the method of objective weights), the Simos method, the SWARA method, the ANP or AHP methods, and many others. This paper analyses the DEMATEL method, frequently used to identify cause-and-effect relationships. Nowadays, it is often used in multi-criteria decision analyses. In the opinion of some authors, DEMATEL may be useful also to determine the weights of criteria. However, the approach presented by these authors has certain drawbacks. The present paper proposes a different approach to the weighting procedure using DEMATEL. Using numerical examples, it also presents weights determined by this method and compared to those obtained using the AHP method.

Decision-making in the field of information systems has become more complex due to larger number of alternatives, multiple and sometimes conflicting goals, and an increasingly uncertain environment. Software systems play unique roles in the translation of corporate strategic and tactical plans into actions. We present the results of a study designed to develop and evaluate an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model to support decision making in the selection of appropriate software system to meet organizational needs. Our results show the viability of the AHP methodology in software system/project selection, and points to the importance of functionality (35.26%), quality (22.00%) and usability (19.34%) criteria in the overall decision process. Cost and vendor service did not seem to exert significant weight in the decision matrix.

Efficient knowledge management allows to avoid of re-seeking solutions to the problems that have already been resolved. Therefore, knowledge should be stored in knowledge bases which are currently often developed in the ontological form. The most important issues, related to the construction of knowledge bases, are: the selection of knowledge representation language, the selection of methodology of the knowledge base construction, and the selection of the ontology processor to support of the development such a structure. The paper presents, based on multi-criteria decision analysis methods, the procedure of the ontology processor selection, based on the characteristics of this type of tools. Selection was conducted with the use of the Conjunctive (Satisficing) and the Fuzzy TOPSIS methods. As a result of the multi-criterial procedure, the processor with optimum level of individual characteristics necessary in this type of software has been indicated.
