The paper analyses an Old East Slavic document – Грамота кн. Дмитрия Юрьевича в. кн. Василию Васильевичу in the context of its textuality. The language and structure of the text are described in order to prove that it can be analysed as a text in the meaning applied in modern text linguistics. Moreover, the paper shows that a wider investigation is necessary in order to prove its stylistic and genre features.

The Ves′ in historical and linguistic perspective: documentary evidence and linguistic analysis

This paper addresses the historical Ves′ (Весь), as represented in the Old East Slavic chronicles, with the goal of establishing the relevant linguistic facts pertaining to this people so that they may then serve as a foundation for future etymological and interdisciplinary research. We first present the documentary evidence and analyze it for its informational content. This is followed by linguistic comments on the name Весь in the context of the Old East Slavic language system and a discussion of the class of ethnonyms to which it belongs. Here, we consider a recent suggestion (Dzibel′, 2021) that the early Slavic suffix */-j-/ was involved in the formation of such names, but are unable to garner historical linguistic support for it. The traditional view with its own implications for etymological solutions is therefore elaborated and supported by linguistic arguments.

Tento článek se zabývá historickým národem Ves′ (Весь), jak je zastoupen ve staroslověnských kronikách, s cílem zjistit relevantní jazyková fakta týkající se tohoto národa, aby mohla posloužit jako základ pro budoucí etymologický a interdisciplinární výzkum. Nejprve představujeme dokumentární doklady a analyzujeme je z hlediska jejich informačního obsahu. Poté následuje lingvistický komentář ke jménu Весь v kontextu starovýchodoslovanského jazykového systému a diskuse o třídě etnonym, do které patří. Zvažujeme tak nedávný návrh (Dzibel′, 2021), že se na tvoření těchto jmen podílel raně slovanský sufix */-j-/, ale nepodařilo se nám pro něj získat historickou lingvistickou podporu. Je proto rozpracován tradiční názor s vlastními důsledky pro etymologické řešení, který je podpořen lingvistickými argumenty.
