This paper focuses on reflections of the work of world-famous journalist and writer Oriana Fallaci (1929–2006) in Czech journalism after 2001. Fallaci went down in the history of journalism primarily as the author of interviews with prominent politicians and reports from the majority of armed conflicts during the latter half of the 20th century, as well as for her rejection of political correctness in her communications. After the terrorist attacks on 11th September 2001 she adopted an uncompromisingly critical stance towards Islam, which she incorporated in the text of The Rage and the Pride, a work that provoked conflicting reactions in Czech journalism, from impartial references on the subject to the adoption of personal stances by Czech authors with personal experience of life in European countries with substantial Muslim minorities and interpretation of Fallaciʼs opinions in terms of veneration for European conservative values.

Oriana Fallaci had the opportunity to closely observe the efforts the US made during the Space Race which was sealed in 1957 by the launch of the first Russian Sputnik. The journalist knew dozens of NASA workers (including astronauts, engineers and doctors) and others (external scientists, advertisers, writers). Based on the interviews and articles printed in L’Europeo, Fallaci published two books Se il Sole muore (1965) and Quel giorno sulla Luna (1970). Recently, the publishing house Rizzoli collected some of Fallaci’s texts that appeared in this weekly newspaper (L’Europeo) between 1964 and 1980 in the volume La Luna di Oriana (2018). It would be worth analyzing the cornerstones of Fallaci’s narrative approach, resembling in many ways the American New Journalism – with its tension between information and emotion, interpretation and persuasion – in her work before the famous war reports.

The aim of the article is to analyse the particularity of second-person narratives in non-fiction. Their special status results from the fact that telling another person his or her own story is a convention in fiction but occurs rarely in everyday communication. In non-fiction narratives, the problem of different perspectives (of the narrator and the addressee) is particularly valid, i.e. often the point of view of the narrative “you” is only a disguised point of view of the “I.” The analysis of A Man by Oriana Fallaci shows the shift from the melting of perspectives to an evident distance. In Hanna Krall’s Hamlet, the “I” presents the “you” with an ultimate interpretation of his life.

From Tithonus to the Struldbrugs of Swift, the old age is seen as a phase of decline, of decay, of exclusion from active life, which generates conditions of need. Senility can become even an influencing discrimination: in 1969 Robert Butler coined the term ageism and developed the theory of the phenomenon. So it is very surprising to see the optimism of Oriana Fallaci who observed: «They are fools those who refuse [the old age] and in order to refuse it they make the facelift, they dress up like a twenty-yearold, they cheat on age. Silly and ungrateful. […] The oldness is a beautiful age. The golden age of Life» [IA 149-150]. The tone marvels even more if you think about the cancer against which the Florentine journalist fought for years. It therefore seems interesting to analyze the reason for such serenity, despite the thanatic shadow.

In Italy for the last decade, a very interesting public debate has been conducted about artificial reproduction. An important step in this discussion was the adoption in 2004 of a special law regulating the use of the in vitro method. In 2014 the Constitutional Court cancelled the prohibition, existing in this document, of the methods of heterological artificial reproduction. A very important part of the debate in Italy are different kinds of philosophical arguments. The most interesting or very representative voices in this discussion include statements of Oriana Fallaci, Vittorio Possenti, and Gianni Vattimo.
