This article is a reflection on the issue of dignified death in the context of volunteer work in the hospice movement. Its main objective is to show a positive value of volunteer work in this field of human activities and its philosophical grounds. In order to fully grasp the presented problem, issues concerning the sense of death and suffering in human life are raised and the phenomenon and essence of the hospice movement and palliative care are presented . Only on this grounds the issue of volunteer work in hospice movement is being brought up and its characteristic feature - selfless love discussed basing on philosophical concepts of Karol Wojtyla and Tadeusz Styczen.

A starting point for the following considerations is an attempt at describing ethics attitude in the matter of limits of helping people who are in terminal state. The author assumes that increasing demand for providing such help in specialized institutions - hospices - is a sign of domination of ethics of sanctity of life in societies, in which humans, independently of their state of health have the right to medical benefits. In conclusion of the article the author states that traditional formulas of social justice, regardless of high popularity of some ideas of ethics of quality of life, still remain in force and one cannot expect that such a situation will change in the predictable future.

Analyzing the situation of the elderly in today’s society it can be seen that flexible modernity as well as changes concerning conditions and lifestyles require from them reinterpretation of patterns of experiencing their old age. They are forced to work out by themselves their own and a more contemporary model of old age. The elderly have to take up a serious challenge that contemporary civilization puts out to them. The article which refers this problem tries to show the situation of the elderly in today’s society.

Social work is an important issue in social life. That is why lots of scientists and researchers dedicate more time to it doing theoretical and methodological research. One of it refers to social work from the perspective of profession. In this sense, what can be expected from a social worker is professionalism in helping individuals and various social groups to function again in the society. The article shows that it is necessary to appreciate social work and the profession of a social worker who tries to help a man in need in a professional way.
