The study deals with the forked “Y-cross” from the 14th century which is now in the inventory of the Roman Catholic parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Mariendom) in Andernach. The town became the main assembly point of Hungarian pilgrims heading for Aachen or Cologne (Kőln am Rhein). Andernach is situated near the Middle Rhine stretch and pilgrims here were provided with free accommodation, sanitation and feeding from the 14th up to 18th centuries. Pilgrims, even from the Slovak part of the empire, were very thankful for that to citizens of Andernach. They are said to keep in the church crosses and flags that were later carried in processions. The unique gothic forked cross with the crucified Christ set the tone for a depiction of Saviour in the 14th century. Regarding the sacral relic, we do not know answers to basic questions. We do not know anything about its origin and background or fate. Therefore, we will seek answers for three basic questions: Why did Hungarian pilgrims assemble exactly in Andernach? What is the genesis of the Hungarian cross, respectively can we historically document its origin based on available sources? Can we determine its provenance based on typical features of its artistic style and details of its creation?

The pilgrimage in Slovakia was characterized by a complex development, accompanied by periods of its prosperity and decline. In the first half of the 19th century, the pilgrimages of believers from the sub-region of Horné Kysuce were still influenced by the surviving baroque piety; they preserved the character of a ritualized religious celebration associated with the participation of pilgrims in the role of a religious subject. They had the character of an outwardly manifested expression of folk religiosity and they were one of the folk sociability forms. The aim of the study is to reconstruct a form of the pilgrimage of Roman Catholic believers from Horné Kysuce to the Marian pilgrimage site in Frýdek the town (currently Frýdek-Místek in the Czech Republic) in the first half of the 19th century. It points out that the pilgrimages fulfilled a primary religious function, at the same time, the socio-cultural, regional and inter-ethnic contacts took place through them. They were an opportunity for intense cultural exchange, which was reflected in the material and intangible culture of the sub-region of Horné Kysuce. Pilgrims helped establish and maintain contacts with neighboring regions, brought news, new ideas and enriched the system of traditional culture with new elements and phenomena. The study is a contribution to the knowledge of the history and forms of the pilgrimage tradition in Slovakia.

The visual arts competition accompanying European Heritage Days 2007, held under the slogan 'People of the Road, Travelers, Pilgrims, Wanderers', was organised by the National Heritage Board of Poland and the Centre for Citizenship Education. The intention of the event was predominantly to stir children's interest in culture, its roots and material and spiritual heritage, by resorting to artistic activity. The prizes were one- and two-day excursions to a chosen site in Poland, The organisers wished to contribute to the cultural education of the youngest participants by offering them an opportunity to tour localities which comprise the most valuable evidence of the cultural heritage of our country and recommended that the winners specially visit monuments included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The names and works of winners have been already published in 'Ochrona Zabytków' and on the Internet sites of the European Heritage Days 2007 and the Centre for Citizenship Education < www.ceo.org.pl>. Furthermore, the organisers maintain contact with the winners who are supplying them with accounts of their tours. At the end of April 2008 four winners - Kacper Jung, Stanislaw Zan, Gabriela Zurek and Katarzyna Sereda, pupils of Primary School no.1 in Bilgoraj, set off, together with their adult companions, for a two-day trip to Cracow to see the complex of historical monuments on Wawel Hill and the Seweryn Udziela Ethnographic Museum. The winners also showed great interest in the magnificent Teutonic Order castle in Malbork. An additional award founded by the periodical 'Zabytki. Heritage' enabled pupils from Primary School in Zlojec, accompanied by their teacher, Malgorzata Magryta, to tour the castles in Gniew and Malbork. A group of winners also visited the Salt Mine in Wieliczka, which in 1978 was added to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List among the first 12 sites in the whole world. The Renaissance town of Zamosc was the destination of winners in the category of the film pupils of the Cardinal S. Wyszynski Secondary School in Aleksandrow, accompanied by their teachers. Considerable interest in the competition and especially its remarkable outcome and the satisfaction of the winners are sufficient confirmation of the rank of such undertakings. .
