Copy protection mechanisms used for protecting documents contained in digital libraries are still far from being perfect. This paper describes some basic plagiarism search techniques, and introduces the method used by KOPI Online Plagiarism Search and Information Portal in details.

In May 2011, at the Faculty of Chemistry of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, in the attempt to diagnose the actual causes of student plagiarism, a survey has been conducted. On the basis of the analysis of the responses conclusions can be drawn about whether comprehensive and systematic release of information to the students on the conditions of plagiarism, the necessity of its avoidance, and warnings against its consequences are a sufficient preventative measure and what is the student's view on the actual causes of plagiarism and the ways they should be taught to avoid it? In the article, the description of the tests, their results and author's conclusions are presented.

In the literary and paraliterary texts by Russian authors of the latter half of the 18th century the problem of literary stealing, not revealed in the texts of the previous periods, was noticed. The theory of imitation, considered to be the basic rule of literary composition since the beginning of old-Russian literature, encouraged the authors to use borrowings and to copy the models. The situation changed in the 18th century when the Russian authors familiarised themselves with West-European theoretical works referring to the problem of imitation and the borderline between creative use of a literary model and literary stealing. This changed also the relation to literary work which was treated then as an author's property. Violation of the authorship provoked emotional reactions of the literary milieu. Numerous writers' opinions related to literary stealing demonstrate the increasing consciousness of authors and the need to regulate copyright and related laws.

In the first half of the 17th-century Polish literature succumbed to a wave of plagiarism, which ranged from crude appropriation of authorship or the ransacking of whole passages from someone else's text to the uninhibited production of various compilations, adaptations, and cryptoquotes. One of the most prolific plagiarists was Jan Karol Dachnowski, who published under his own name Jan Zabczyc's collection of carols 'Angelic symphonies'. This article identifies another of Dachnowski's plagiarisms. It is the mystery poem 'Dialogue about the wondrous nativity of the Son of God' (1621). More than half of that poem, so far regarded as Dachnowski's original work, was in fact copied verbatim from Grzegorz Czaradzki's 'Rhymes on the immaculate birth by the the Virgin Mary, Mother of God' (1613). What makes this 'borrowing' even more astounding is the fact that Czaradzki's poem happens to be a translation of 'De partu Virginis' by the celebrated Renaissance poet Jacopo Sanazzaro.

In the magazine L’Indipendente issued in Naples on 28th December 1860 the first chapter of the Italian translation of Alexandre Dumas’s short story called Lassassinio di Rue Saint-Roch was published. The last part was published on 8th January 1861. As it can be seen from the text, it originated under the influence of E. A. Poe‘s world known short story called The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) that had already been available in French at that time. The short story was published for the first time in 2012 in Italian in Uga Cundari’s edition and with his circumstantial summary to it. The name of the translator is unknown and the French original disappeared, too. The editor says that this work of the French author presents a document that literary works up the personal meeting of Poe and Dumas in Paris in the 1830s. The aim of this study is to take critical reflection on Cundari’s argumentation and to analyse the relationship between these two texts taking into consideration the issues of translation, plagiarism and rewritings.

The scientist and so also the historian needs to work with the media to publish and propagate the results of his or her work. Historians are often addressed by journalists and publicists for cooperation, and frequently the information provided is misused, twisted or inappropriately paraphrased and the ethical code of journalists is coarsely violated. The journalists themselves are aware of this problem and they attempt to solve it through their professional bodies. The article is devoted to the unfair ways of using the work of historians in journalistic practice. It appeals for improved relations by means of observance of professional and ethical rules.

Plagiarism has represented a bulging ethical and legal problem in recent decades. It is one of the dominant forms of academic dishonesty, both in the university and scientific environments. Various factors provide fertile soil for it - from the commercialization of education, through the digitalization of information technologies, to the growing competition for publication in the world of science. Various initiatives and discussions have reacted to this problem. They are striving to establish ethical behaviour and zero tolerance to academic dishonesty. The movement for “good scientific practice”, “scientific integrity” and standardizing measures in the academic environment is an important instrument for preventing and eliminating plagiarism. The transfer of ethical standards and their mutual harmonization is part of the integration of individual national sciences into the international base. In the end, this process contributes to establishing concrete steps and norms, enabling the consistent identification, judgement and sanctioning of plagiarism in scientific work. The legislative norms of the individual states remain key legal pillars of any norm setting in the field of scientific practice and in the struggle against plagiarism. In Slovakia this means especially the Act on Rights of Authorship. On the other hand, its use in solving cases of plagiarism has proved to be less effective than a consistent approach in the framework of the academic world.

The similarity between logic and semantics of the Stoics and Frege has long been known, and it can be explained in various ways. In 2021, Susane Bobzien published a work in which she explains this similarity rather surprisingly: she hypothesizes that Frege helped himself generously with the foundations of Stoic logic as it was published in the first volume of History of Logic in the West by Carl Prantl. However, this hypothesis encounters various problems. The key point of the whole accusation is founded on the formulation of a general proposition in language using implication and anaphora, which Frege took supposedly from the Stoics, although in Prantl’s text there is only one example of a sentence with this structure. On the contrary, there are many examples of such sentences in contemporary professional (e.g. legal) texts. Many examples of semantic similarities that Bobzien presents are based only on the similarities between isolated concepts; however, that is regularly the case for such concepts with the same conceptual basis. Bobzien presents a significant number of matches only on the basis of results that could be inferred allegedly from the texts. However, this cannot be considered as a proof of plagiarism. Bobzien does not consider many sources for the continuity of interpretation such as the so-called hypothetical syllogism found in available textbooks of logic. Last but not least, her claims do not consider many differences between Stoic and Frege’s logic. All this leads us to the conclusion that Bobzien does not present sufficient facts and connections between them that would confirm her hypothesis about Frege’s plagiarism of the Stoic logic: Frege simply was not a plagiarist.

(Title in Slovak - 'Vybrane otazky autorskeho prava v oblasti hudobnej tvorby (I. cast) Problematika citacie, epigonstva a plagiatu v nadvaznosti na pravnu ochranu hudobneho diela'). A quotation of the musical piece in another musical piece is common, however, in practice it brings problems specific to this particular kind of authorial work. The topic of the quotation also relates to the distinction between quotation and allusion. Another problem is how to define academism and epigonism as phenomena which are parts of the so called everyday creativity however they do not break the law. Where epigonism is concerned, here there cannot be any consideration of responsibility for a breach of authorial right, because the protection of the Slovak law on authorship does not (among other things) relate to the method, system, principle, etc. Unlike plagiarism, which is not a means of author's creativity in the right meaning of the word and rather, other works are subject to parasitism. The author suggests that plagiarism be defined as the production of mutations of concrete material from the work of another author.

Social responsibility of media is a phenomenon that has currently become a focus of attention not only of media theorists, but also journalistic and general public. It includes such terms as ethics of media, ethics of professional media work, informational ethics and it may be assessed only within a total political-social and cultural context. The state of its level may be considered from adhering to such requirements like freedom of the press and right of information, right of personality protection, responsibility, truthfulness and impartiality of journalists. In the paper there is a brief analysis of development and the state of social responsibility of media after 1998, with the emphasis on the last five years.
