Teenage rebellion is a part of social development in adolescents in order for them to develop an identity independent from their parents or guardians. Moreover, teens shape identity through revolt. This phenomenon affected also members of the Philomath Society, which was formed in 1817 at the Imperial University of Vilnius. Philomaths rebelled against the old generation, upbringing methods, weakness in the Society, idleness of youth. They were not indifferent to the political situation, so that they mutinied against the Russian Empired. The Philomath Society’s rebellion manifested in rule of the secrecy, pedagogic activity (formation of the youth associations, work as teachers), prosocial activity, language and tradition preserving. Teenage rebellion of Philomaths aimed at changing the reality, which was unacceptable.

The Society of Philomaths was established on October 13, 1817 by six students of the University of Vilnius. The main goal of the association was self-education and self-improvement. Over time, the Philomaths expanded their activities, creating dependent associations. The youth did not focus just on their studies. They participated in the cultural life of Vilnius, make friends with prominent figures of the local community, but also created an internal social life in the field of youth associations. The article aims to present the events in which Philomaths participated, describe their entertainment and also try to determine how social life defined the character of the youth organization.

Towarzystwo Filomatów powstało 13 października 1817 r. z inicjatywy sześciu studentów Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego. Głównym celem stowarzyszenia było samokształcenie oraz samodoskonalenie. Z czasem filomaci rozszerzyli swą działalność, tworząc związki zależne. Młodzieńcy nie ograniczali się wyłącznie do nauki. Uczestniczyli w życiu kulturalnym Wilna, nawiązywali kontakty z prominentnymi postaciami społeczności lokalnej, ale także tworzyli wewnętrzne życie towarzyskie na niwie związków młodzieżowych. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie wydarzeń, w jakich uczestniczyli filomaci, opisanie form rozrywek, które były im bliskie, a także próba określenia, w jaki sposób życie towarzyskie definiowało charakter młodzieżowej organizacji.
