Tracing the Belorussian Poleszuks (a report on field research)The present article is a report on field research conducted in summer 2010 in order to collect dialectological material. 13 localities were researched altogether: Pinsk and 11 villages of the Pinsk district and one village of the Stolin district. During the interviews the following topics were discussed: the language situation in the village, issues of national identity, visions of Polesia and Poleszuks, traditions and customs, issues of confession, attitude towards the process of draining bogs or image of Poland and Poles. Belorussian linguists (e.g. A. Krywicki) take note of the fact that Polesia, despite frequent dialectological research, has not been described accurately enough by linguists. The rich material collected showed not only well-preserved dialects of Polesia of Ukrainian basis (slight influence mainly of the Russian language can be observed with people of the oldest generation) but also strong though disappearing spiritual and material culture of the inhabitants of Polesia.

The western part of Polesia (Polish: Polesie) was made part of Poland resulting from the Treaty of Riga, 1921. Characteristic to the area were specific economic and ethnic traits. Civilisational retardation and, in a number of cases, underdeveloped ethnic/national awareness of the locals caused Polish authorities to formulate projects with respect to this region aimed at gradual Polonisation of its populace. The process was regarded as an element of civilisation-instilling mission, as well as a precondition for achievement of the desired goals related to internal and external safety. These projects, and the results of Polonisation process, are analysed herein.

The history of the orthodox eparchy of Volodymyr-Brest is little known in the Polish scientific literature. In 1086 the eparchy played an important role in shaping religious identity of the Belarusians and Ukrainians living in the area. A study on the history of the Volodymyr-Brest eparchy (one of the eldest within the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania) constitutes a significant factor in perceiving historical and national awareness of today's Belarusians and Ukrainians. Yet, another argument in favour of the subject is a symbiosis of the lot of the eparchy with the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish Crown. The Christian mission in the contemporary eparchy of Volodymyr has been conducted since the governorship of Volodymyr was established, i.e. in 992. During that time the eparchy encompassed the lands of Volhynia, Polesia, Podlahia, Brest, and the lands of Czerwień Towns with Halych, Przemyśl, Belz and later Lvov. The area of the orthodox eparchy of Volodymyr-Brest is difficult to specify for borders of orthodox eparchies, established before 1596, have been of hypothetical nature until today. It is worth highlighting that a territorial structure of these eparchies was basically built in the 14th century. However, the borders used to change in the following centuries. These changes can be recognized via an analysis of the borders of particular eparchies. At first, one can assume that the borders used to be congruent with the state and administrative borders inside the country. The terrains of administrative units were identical with the borders of eparchies. Nevertheless, an exact determination of these borders demands an incorporation of particular administrative and property changes which took place in the 16th century. In case of the Volodymyr-Brest eparchy, a decisive factor in determining its territory is research on the changes of state affiliation of given parts of the eparchy. The shaped area of the Volodymyr-Brest eparchy lasted till the end of the 16th century.

This paper is devoted to the problems of the sacred space in the prose of one of the contemporary Ukrainian writers Volodymyr Lys. The basis for these analyses are three novels that form the co called “Volhynia trilogy” (Jacob’s Century, Solo for Solomiya, and Virgo of Mlynyshche). The analyses of the above-mentioned works allow us to conclude that the writer quite often refers to functioning of category of sanctity which can be divided in a conventional way into several spaces. One of them is undoubtedly the sacralization of Volyn as a “small homeland” of its inhabitants, but the analysis also revealed the use of legends, folk beliefs and frequent references to religious tradition and the belief in God. It can be said that the mysterious relationship between the good and the evil, sin and sanctity is a characteristic feature of Volodymyr Łys’ “Volhynia Saga,” which creates a specific world where man lives with the God, sensing Him almost physically.

The rivers of Polesia and Volhynia (the Horyn, Styr, Sluch, Pina, Prypiat Rivers and other) are analysed in the present paper as waterways which bring along modernity and carry it further inland on the one hand, and on the other, as guards of patriarchal hierarchies, which according to Orgelbrand’s Encyclopedia, are equivalent to a civilization referred to as moral, affirming simplicity, religion, and selfless relations with others. In the descriptions of places which constitute Kraszewski’s autobiography (travelogues, memoirs, letters, journalistic and fiction works) one may observe a kind of internal tension of the perceiving subject, who continues to value antiquity, but notices with certain nostalgia the anachronism of the world “at the banks of great rivers” and recognises the need for civilizational transformation.

Celem artykułu jest przypomnienie nowatorskich koncepcji Józefa Obrębskiego opublikowanych w roku 1936, a dotyczących teorii grupy etnicznej, dialogicznego charakteru poczucia tożsamości narodowej i struktury opozycji swój / obcy.

The article deals with unique ideas of Józef Obrębski, published in 1936 and relating to the theory of an ethnic group, a dialogic nature of national identity and the structure of the US / THEM opposition. The shaping of one’s image of a group is possible only through contact and dialogue with other groups, for only contact allows one to identify differences and develop the feeling of one’s own ethnic identity (self-stereotype). According to Obrębski, the US / THEM category has a mental and not an ethnographic nature; therefore, it is humanistic and imagistic. The image of one’s own group is a negative of that of others; it is composed not of all features but only of socially distinctive ones. The US / THEM opposition is also contextual, dependent on historical conditions, language, rituals, cultural patterns. A claim is made that Obręski, who referred to the work of Florian Znaniecki and Jan S. Bystroń, was also inspired by structural linguistics, specifically the conception of distinctiveness and the phonological theory of opposition, which distinguished a phoneme from a phone or the functional and mental aspect from the physical aspect. The article also presents the means in which Obrębski portrayed the US / THEM opposition in relation to: (a) Polish Russian relations in Polesia, where national contrasts are augmented by deep social differences of the type “master peasant” and additional characterological connotations; (b) the image of a Jew as a stranger to the Polesia community but at the same time a mediator between ethnic groups in the region; (c) the social and ritual foreignness of women, who from the point of view of the mentality of patriarchal families were an “internally foreign” element.

The problem of nationality on the periphery of Central Eastern Europe. The case of Polesia between the two warsAbstractThe territory of Polesia in the interwar period was an area of competition between the national movements of Belarusian, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian communities. In the Polesia Province, the scope of activity and intensification of national factors were not the same. An influence of the Belarusian movement was seen only in the north of the province, in the districts of Kosów and Prużana. The more active in Polesia Ukrainian movement was the strongest in southern, and south-western districts: of Brześć on the Bug, Kobryń, and Kamień Koszyrski. Russians were the most successful in the cities of Brześć and Pińsk, and in the eastern part of the region, in the neighbourhood of the towns of Łuniniec and Dawidgródek, where influences of the Belarusian and Ukrainian movements were minimal. But the idea of “the great Russian nation” was gradually becoming an anachronism within the borders of the Second Republic of Poland. Poland was an active player in the arena of national affairs in Polesia, as it sought to gain the support of local people through a unification policy of the state apparatus. The apogee of the Polonization action was in 1932–1939, after the office of Polesia voivode was taken by Col. Wacław Kostka-Biernacki. Activists of various national movements in Polesia were actively fought against by the State authorities. The voivodeship administration hampered all non-Polish national agitation among inhabitants of the region. The government of the Second Polish Republic did not succeed in combating civilisational backwardness in Polesia. An average inhabitant of the region was, in the first place, a member of his local rural community and often had no idea that for the State administration he was a Pole, for an Orthodox priest he was a Russian, and for a radical rural intellectual – a Belarusian or Ukrainian. A passive attitude of the majority of local people towards the question of nationality was still common at the end of the interwar period.

In the Second Polish Republic, the culmination point of the huge economic crisis called the Great Depression occurred in 1932. The crisis affected particularly inhabitants of villages, including those dominated by national minorities in eastern provinces. One such region was Polesia. The aim of this text is to answer the question of how the situation of economic collapse was addressed by representatives of the state administration system, one of whom was Jan Krahelski – the Head of the Polesia Province in 1926–1932. At the end of his period in office, he often expressed his views on the condition of the province and the desirable means that could have reduced the consequences of the crisis. The text is based on archival materials acquired from archives of Poland, Belarus, and Russia. Krahelski was an advocate of moderate nationality policy. He refrained from the Polonisation of national minorities and tried not to escalate political repressions almost until the end of his period in office as Head of the province. The radicalisation of social moods combined with the deepening economic collapse forced him to revise his opinion about the methods of ensuring internal security. The analysis of the source materials, for which an important point of reference is also an armed rebellion that occurred on the borderland of the Kashirsky County [the Polesia Province] and the Kovel County [the Volhynia Province], suggests that administrative bodies in the eastern provinces could properly diagnose the general condition of the territory entrusted to them, but at the same time, they did not fully recognise its sources; therefore, they may have been surprised with the collapse of the order.

Radykalizacja nastrojów społecznych związana z pogłębiającym się załamaniem ekonomicznym zmusiła go do rewizji stanowiska w kwestii metod zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa wewnętrznego.
