Despite being highly controversial, the two great metaphors, genesis and ethnogenesis, remain present in the discourse on prehistory. They determine the thinking on ethnogenesis, as much so today as in the times of Józef Kostrzewski, and it is on them that the prehistorian's or historian's work is based. These metaphors have also prevailed in the discourse on the significance of Biskupin for the ethnogenesis of the Slavs and that is why Biskupin continues to be of such importance for emergent archaeological knowledge. It has always been an irrefutable argument in its acceptance. In the present article the author discusses the concept of Polish (prehistoric) archaeology in the 1st half of the 20th c., built chiefly around the ethnogenesis metaphor.
