The paper aims to draw the reader’s attention to the phraseological and paremiological character of Rushdie’s novels by analyzing the translation of his prose work into selected Slavic tongues. The scope of the article is restricted and therefore the problems that ensue are only sketchily presented: that is, the author shows the three major groups of paremic interlingual equivalents illustrating them with suitable examples from the translated books. It transpires that the illustrative material contains both full and partial equivalents. Also the translations show the translators’ strategies when there are no paremic equivalents available. The author also points out erroneous translations and paremic omissions.

During the last decades, scholars have paid more and more attention to the relationship between the biblical Wisdom tradition and other cultures outside the Ancient Near East. This article represents the first attempt to compare the proverbs of the Viet people in the Far East with the sentences in Wisdom of Sirach, a collection of instructions and maxims in ancient Israel. Such a comparison shows some similarities in content between biblical maxims and Vietnamese folklore sayings, especially in what concerns family relationship and varied aspects of daily life wisdom. The research offers ground for further theological reflections and exploration on the issue of divine inspiration in non-biblical cultures as well as the inculturation of the Bible in a non-Christian environment like Vietnam.

W ostatnich latach, teologowie i bibliści zwrócili coraz większą uwagę na związek między mądrością biblijną a tradycjami narodów znajdujących się poza kulturowym kręgiem starożytnego Półksiężyca. Nasz artykuł przedstawia pierwsze porównywanie przysłów ludu Wiet z Dalekiego Wschodu z sentencjami księgi Mądrości Syracha, która jest zbiorem pouczeń starożytnej tradycji Izraela. Takie badanie wykazuje wiele podobieństw treściowych między maksymami biblijnymi a wielowiekowymi pouczeniami wietnamskimi, szczególnie w kwestii stosunków w rodzinie i napomnień życiowych. Wyniki tego początkowego poszukiwania przysłużą się do rozważań teologicznych i dalszych badań nad ogólnym tematem natchnienia Bożego w kulturach niebiblijnych oraz nad inkulturacją Biblii w środowisku niechrześciańskim takim jak Wietnam.
