The article discusses religious belonging of Psalterz Dawidow by Mikolaj Rej in the light of a complete original copy discovered by S. Siess-Krzyszkowski in 2019 in the University Library of Erlangen in Germany, which contains impressed date and place of publication (1543). It also presents existing research in this area as well as points to new facts, which might be useful in establishing the religious background of the translation.

W artykule podjęto problematykę związaną z przynależnością wyznaniową Psałterza Dawidowego Mikołaja Reja w kontekście odkrytego przez S. Siessa-Krzyszkowskiego w 2019 r. w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Erlangen w Niemczech kompletnego egzemplarza pierwodruku, z wytłoczoną datą i miejscem wydania (1543). Przedstawiono dotychczasowy stan badań w tym zakresie oraz wskazano nowe fakty, które mogą być pomocne w ustaleniu cech konfesyjnych przekładu.

Psałterz Dawidów Mikołaja Reja to prozatorska parafraza Księgi Psalmów, której głównym celem było uprzystępnienie biblijnego tekstu XVI-wiecznemu odbiorcy. Dążność do konkretyzacji przyczyniła się do nieustannych ingerencji tłumacza w warstwę semantyczno-stylistyczną tekstu, zmianę obrazowania i „wymianę” realiów, co zaowocowało przedostaniem się do polskiego przekładu licznych reminiscencji szlacheckiej wspólnoty kulturowej. Są one obecne zarówno w planie treści: odwoływanie się do wspólnego dla szlacheckiego środowiska systemu wartości (rustykalność, służba ojczyźnie, przekonanie o uprzywilejowanej pozycji stanu szlacheckiego), jak i w planie języka: włączanie do tekstu elementów XVI-wiecznej etykiety językowej, typowej dla socjolektu szlacheckiego, oraz leksyki i frazeologii, znanej z codziennej mowy szlacheckiej wspólnoty.

“David’s Psalter” by Mikołaj Rej is a prose paraphrase of The Book of Psalms whose main aim was to make the biblical text approachable to a 16th-century recipient. The pursuit of the concretization contributed to the continuous interference of the translator in the semantic and stylistic layer of the text, the change in imagery and the ‘exchange’ of reality. This cleared the way for the appearance in the Polish translation numerous images of the noble cultural community. They are present in both the plan of the stylistic layer: references to the system of values common for the nobility (rusticity, national service, the belief of the superiority of the nobility), and in the plan of the language: the inclusion in the text of the elements of 16th-century language etiquette typical of the sociolect of the nobility, as well as the lexicon and the phraseology known from the everyday speech of the nobility.

The article deals with issues connected with chosen stylistic characteristics of prayers in the paraphrase of David’s Psalter by Mikołaj Rej. The analyses aim to determine the stylistic features of the prayer and to point out the features which give it a unique character. Rej’s prayers are kept in the poetics and conventions of a psalm. They make use of the biblical imagery, at the same time complementing the preceding psalms. Emotional epithets, accumulated through synonymous attributes, play an important role in the stylistic shape of the text. Rej uses means characteristic of the elevated style: evaluating epithets, numerous periphrastic expressions and distinguished metaphors of the biblical origin. On the other hand, Rej’s writing witnesses visible instances of crossing the boundaries of the familiar biblical style. The analyzed texts often assume a conversational character and each request is expressed in an individual, spontaneous way by means of different syntactic structures and emotive lexicon.

The article aims to present the most important features of the biblical prose of Mikołaj Rej on the basis of David’s Psalter. The subject of the analyses has not been chosen randomly, as David’s Psalter belongs to ‘pure’ religious texts and it refers to the tradition of free translation, grounded in Poland by the work of Walenty Wróbel. Although it was created in the beginnings of the writer’s works, this literary piece shows stylistic maturity. The analyses indicate that the style of translation is the result of Rej’s conscious, artistic work, who maintained some of the features of the traditional Psalter style.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie najważniejszych cech biblijnej prozy Mikołaja Reja na podstawie parafrazy Psałterza Dawidowego. Wybór przedmiotu analiz nie jest przypadkowy, Psałterz należy do „czystych” tekstów religijnych i nawiązuje do tradycji przekładu swobodnego, ugruntowanej w Polsce tłumaczeniem Walentego Wróbla. Utwór, choć powstał na progu twórczości pisarza, odznacza się stylistyczną dojrzałością. Analizy pokazują, że styl przekładu jest wynikiem świadomej, artystycznej pracy Reja, w której zauważalna jest dbałość o zachowanie niektórych cech tradycyjnego stylu psałterzowego.
