The subject of discussion in the article is the way the protagonist of Vladimir Nabokov’s short story Sounds perceives the world. The sense-forming function of the sound as a literary trick, serv-ing to conceptualize the image of the world and the descriptions of emotional states of Nabokov’s characters, is revealed. It is proved that due to the recollective strategy (reconstructing in his mem-ory the day of parting with the beloved) the protagonist-artist perceives the ubiquitous harmony of sounds in the surrounding reality and at the same time recognizes (Gadamer) his own feelings that once bound him with his beloved. The “rhythmic order” of nature experienced by the protagonist evokes associations with Pythagorean reflection on the existence of permanent dependencies be-tween the rhythm of the Cosmos and the rhythms of man. This finds its expression in Nabokov’s short story in showing the intermingling of the worlds: establishing a relationship (unity) between the internal (emotional) and external (nature) world, between micro and macrocosm. The act of rec-ollection itself inscribes in a strategy of tranforming memories: forming in imagination a different image of the lovers’ parting and creating another – a dreamed image of the beloved.

První koncepce kulovité Země v antické kosmologii

EN
Although it is not until we get to Aristotle that we can be absolutely certain of finding a spherical Earth in ancient cosmology, Diogenes Laertios considers it to have been first conceived by Pythagoras and Parmenides. In both cases, however, we in point of fact do not have at our disposal any additional, adequate sources. Nevertheless, the changes that took place in cosmologies between the 6th and 5th centuries BCE suggest that they are the result of a new cosmological concept. This was based on just precisely a spherical Earth being at the center of the spherical heaven – the universe. Moreover, so far as the concept of a spherical Earth was the product of metaphysical speculation, reports by the representatives of the Italian branch of philosophy would be adequate. Due to an insufficient preservation of the works of the early Pythagorean tradition and the significant influence of Parmenides on the thinkers that followed, it can be presumed that it was Parmenides who was the first to visualize a spherical shape for the Earth.

In works on the philosophy of physics, the history of science, in biographies and autobiographies of scientists, and in popular science literature, there is aesthetic content. Aesthetic values and associated properties have multiple functions in modern physics including non-empirical criteria for selecting scientific theories. The most common aesthetic values are the categories of beauty, elegance and harmony. The sources of the connection between science and aesthetics can be found in the ancient philosophy of nature, particulary in the philosophy of the Pythagoreans, assimilated by Plato and Aristotle. The aspects of Pythagorean philosophy regarding the discoveries in acoustics and mathematics were linked to aesthetic values through the Platonic good-beauty-truth triad, while Aristotle's aesthetics of the Pythagorean order of measure and proportion in the world strengthened this connection. In the ancient Pythagorean-Platonic views we also find the causes of the later epistemological obstacles which scholars associated with aesthetic aspects.

W pracach z filozofii fizyki, historii nauki, w biografiach i autobiografiach uczonych oraz w literaturze popularnonaukowej występują treści o charakterze estetycznym. Wartości estetyczne i kojarzone z nimi właściwości pełnią wielorakie funkcje we współczesnej fizyce, między innymi stanowią poza empiryczne kryteria wyboru teorii naukowych. Aspekty filozofii pitagorejskiej dotyczące odkryć w dziedzinie akustyki i matematyki zostały połączone z wartościami estetycznymi za sprawą platońskiej triady dobro-piękno-prawda, zaś estetyka Arystotelesa związana z pitagorejskim porządkiem miary i proporcji w świecie wzmocniła to połączenie. W starożytnych poglądach pitagorejsko-platońskich odnajdziemy także przyczyny późniejszych przeszkód epistemologicznych, które uczeni łączyli z aspektami estetycznymi.

Aristotelova první filosofie a první filosofové

The author addresses the issue of the origin of the discipline that we call metaphysics. First he briefly describes the difficulties associated with Aristotle’s extant metaphysical concept: problems with the character of his treatise Metaphysics, problems with the arrangement of the individual books, and even problems with the title – all related to the problematic lack of clarity in the discipline itself. He then presents an overview of the common solutions to these difficulties in the conclusion to the first part of the article. In the second part, the author provides a detailed analysis of one of the possible interpretative hypotheses: that Aristotle’s metaphysics is a continuation of the pre-Socratic tradition and, in fact, only explicitly articulates a general, foundational theme of philosophy. This interpretation is closely related to Jan Patočka’s universal concept of metaphysics. By analyzing the textual evidence of the doctrines of the archetypal pre-Socratic candidates for a first metaphysics, the author concludes that, in agreement with recent research, these thinkers do not share Aristotle’s metaphysical approach. Differently from Patočka, the author thereby concludes that we can meaningfully talk about a pre-metaphysical philosophy.

Autor se zabývá problémem původu disciplíny zvané metafyzika. Nejprve nastiňuje obtíže spojené s rekonstrukcí Aristotelovy metafyzické koncepce: problémy s charakterem spisu Metafyzika, problémy s řazením jednotlivých knih, ba dokonce problémy s názvem – to vše souvisí s problematickou nevyjasněností disciplíny samé. V závěru první části prezentuje přehled obvyklých řešení těchto obtíží.
