The linear and matrix barcodes bear significant resemblance to human written language culture. These symbologies are exclusively machine-readable but can be represented with the use of the same physical media as traditional text. This allows people to handle the barcodes along with other material things. The optical nature of matrix codes, especially QR codes, brings a consequence discussed in this paper aimed at presenting creative scenarios of QR code usage in teaching. Codes can be used not only as a machine-readable data encoding but also as tangible artefacts serving as a bridge between real and virtual world. The paper gives several examples of such use cases and describes two experimental applications being tested by the author in practice of university teaching.
