This paper attempts to present four different variations of the sonnet form in the poetry of Rafał Wojaczek. Through the analysis of Wojaczek’s sonnets it identifies the following variations of the sonnet’s form: a graphic sonnet, a classic sonnet, a sonnet with a final couplet (dystych), a free sonnet. It uses archival sources. This paper argues for the vitality of some of the forms of Polish poetry after 1989, and particularly of free verse, making a classical sonnet alive again in multiple ways.

Autorka analizuje współczesną legendę literacką na przykładzie postaci Rafała Wojaczka. Refl eksję opiera na trzech problemach. Dlaczego zbudowanie legendy jest możliwe w literaturze nowoczesnej? Jak kształtują wizerunek Wojaczka opublikowane wspomnienia? Kto i dlaczego konstruuje legendę? Legenda zostaje potraktowana jako rodzaj dyskursu zależnego od innych – literackiego oraz krytyczno-literackiego. Ponadto przyjmuje, że legenda w najszerszym rozumieniu to fenomen kulturowy i społeczny oraz zjawisko ukształtowane przez reguły sztuki rządzące polem literatury nowoczesnej.

The author analyses the phenomenon of a literary legend, taking as an example the figure of Rafał Wojaczek. The author assumes that the legend, understood broadly, is both a social and a cultural phenomenon, shaped by the rules of the art governing the field of modern literature; as well as a discourse depending on other discourses: literary and critical literary. The Author’s reflection is based on three questions: Why is it possible to create a legend in modern literature? How do the published memories shape the image of Wojaczek? Who creates the legend and why?

This paper refers to a street art installation by Robert Gilarski, now in the Planty Park in Mikołów. The installation “schody Wojaczka”, which visualizes Rafał Wojaczek’s poem Sezon, represents the work of the poet written on the steps of a stairway. The author of this paper interpets the poem and considers the difference between the semantics of Sezon’s form as appearing in pring and the one which can be read from the street art project. She points to the influence of topography and analyses the transposition of the poem’s form into a pictorial inscription, where steps-verses play a major role. The most radical change is the one concerning the vertical reading mode, governed by the direction of upward climb on the stairs-verses. A change in expectations towards versification is not meaningless for the interpretation of the work. This reversed order of reading the poem in the installation bears signs of an artistic provocation and presents itself as a metanoia.

Artykuł odwołuje się do pracy street art Roberta Gilarskiego znajdującej się na Plantach w Mikołowie, w której dokonano wizualizacji wiersza Rafała Wojaczka Sezon. Instalacja prezentuje utwór mikołowskiego poety zapisany na stopniach parkowych schodów. Autorka artykułu interpretuje utwór, a następnie rozważa różnicę między semantyka formy Sezonu utrwaloną w druku oraz w pracy street art. Zwraca uwagę na wpływ topografii terenu, analizuje transpozycję formy wiersza w zapis piktorialny, gdzie istotną rolę pełnią schody-wersy. Najbardziej radykalna zmiana zachodzi w trybie lektury wertykalnej, wyznaczonej kierunkiem wchodzenia po stopniach-wersach „do góry”. Zmiana wersyfikacyjnych oczekiwań nie pozostaje bez konsekwencji dla interpretacji utworu. Odwrócony porządek odczytywania wiersza w instalacji ma znamiona prowokacji artystycznej i objawia się jako metanoja.

The present article attempts to interpret the poem Wyrok [The Verdict] written by Rafał Wojaczek. The author tries to reveal the rules of the game in the play with psychoanalysis that are set in motion in the poem by the introduction of the Freudian signature to the text. Citing the Oedipus complex as one of the “representative” mechanisms for the development of the phenomenon of unawareness, he proceeds to prove that the theory of psychoanalysis as the interpretative context can function on the principle of the paradox, i.e. the stronger the denial of it within the subject, the more important it becomes for the understanding of the work. In this way, Wojaczek, by making the poem heretically sealed, opens it up to interpretation and, eventually, implies that its sense goes beyond any explanation (negation of psychoanalysis as an interpretative method). This last statement makes the basis for a formulation of further assumptions on the psychical structure of the subject (conscious unawareness and unconscious awareness), as well as the relations between the author, the subject and the lyrical protagonist where the author, after exceeding the limits of the poem, splits himself into two instances: textual representation (that of the father) and the lyrical “I” that is the irrevocable verdict condemning the poet to making them fit into language and grammar. An attempt, then, at salvation and a coupling of the body (blood) with the lingering word turns out, however, to be deadly, a carrying out of the verdict.

The article discusses Anita Jarzyna’s book “Pójście za Norwidem” (w polskiej poezji współczesnej), published in Lublin in 2013. It is a diligent work, showing good philological skills of its author and expanding our knowledge about lyric poetry. The study was created under the supervision of an outstanding expert in Polish poetry, Prof. Piotr Śliwiński, as an MA thesis, defended in 2008. The publication is very important, although erratic, but it is attributable to the researcher’s little experience at that time. Of course, the author of the review knows the subsequent works of Anita Jarzyna, which, according to the reviewer, prove that we are dealing with a great commentator of Polish poetry.
