The paper contains a comparative interpretation of Andrzej Sosnowski’s Nouvelles impressions d’Amérique and two pieces by Raymond Roussel: Impressions d’Afrique, and Nouvelles impresssions d’Afrique. Sosnowski’s epic poem is analysed as a postcolonial re-writing of phantasmatic and defective representation of otherness from Roussel’s texts. The goal of the article is to describe the mechanisms of complex and multi-layer deconstruction of Roussel’s two pieces and to demonstrate the mode in which the author, experiencing otherness, searches muted Others in the colonial imagination of the beginning of the 20th c. to allow them to speak their voice and to adopt their perspective. Following Sosnowski, the study discusses the limitations and possibilities of such a project.
